New Star Trek TV show launching on CBS and All Access

New Star Trek TV show launching on CBS and All Access

This morning CBS announced that an all-new (not reruns) Star Trek TV series will be launching in January of 2017. That's a long ways off. But it will have Alex Kurtzman, Co-Writer and Producer of the Blockbuster Films "Star Trek" and "Star Trek Into Darkness" as Executive Producer, so that'll be neat. This TV show is thus far just called "Star Trek", but may have a different name by the time it launches. We're crossing our fingers for a whole new era with callbacks - rather than the oddity that was Enterprise.

Samsung TVs in Europe allegedly game efficiency testing [Updated]

With all the drama about VW gaming efficiency tests in the US for its diesel cars, it looks like a crack down on manufacturers trying to skirt testing might happen across multiple markets. Samsung is allegedly using a defeat device on some of the TVs it sells in Europe to defeat official efficiency testing. Independent lab tests have found that some of the Samsung offerings available in Europe use less energy in official testing that they do in the real world.

Samsung Serif TV is inspired by font design

Samsung Serif TV is inspired by font design

Curved displays notwithstanding, the physical design of televisions hasn't really changed, except to get thinner and thinner. They are simply rectangle screens with a minimal border frame. Well, Samsung has come up with something different, and it's inspired font design: the Serif TV, as in a serif typeface, or one with those little ligatures on the letters. The TV is the result of a collaboration with French designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, and is said to have originated from the capital letter "I" in a serif font.

Sesame Street gets “exclusive” with HBO

Sesame Street is about to break standards for television shows that've been on for 45 seasons. Not that a lot of shows have been on for that long, of course. But here the Sesame Street show is prepared not to go off and fade away, but to grow. Signing a deal with HBO, Sesame Workshop has promised five seasons to HBO with "almost twice as much new content as previous seasons." This content will be "exclusive" to HBO for nine months after each episode is aired, after which PBS will be allowed to show reruns for free.

Razer acquires OUYA officially

Razer acquires OUYA officially

In a move that'll likely put them in competition direct with the likes of NVIDIA, Razer has acquired Android console-maker OUYA. This tiny machine - the OUYA - was created back before Android TV was a reality, making headway in the "Android console" space before Android was prepared to live in the living room. Over the past couple of years the company hasn't done especially well for itself, falling a bit behind in the market as it fails to summon the explosive response elicited with its original launch.

Gillian Anderson as Carmen Sandiego: the anti-Scully

A number of photos appear showing Gillian Anderson in a bright red full-length coat and hat, prompting rumors of a return of Carmen Sandiego. What happens when you put on a wide-brimmed bright red hat and a bright red coat and sit in a bus terminal? People assume you're hiding something. People assume you're part of the international 90's hit TV series Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego. Sadly, they'd be wrong. They'd be entirely, shockingly, and unabatedly wrong, PBS for Kids style.
