Pixel 3 messages are disappearing but there’s good news

Google is working on a fix for a Pixel 3 messaging bug, after some owners complained that SMS texts have been unexpectedly disappearing. The glitch is the latest in a string of complaints about Google's 2018 Android flagships, which have most recently received an update enabling the Night Sight feature in the camera.

How does Google Night Sight work?

How does Google Night Sight work?

Today we're taking a peek with Google at their Night Sight feature for the Google Camera app on Pixel phones. The basic concept begins with keeping the Pixel's camera's shutter open longer than normal - allowing more light in on the camera's image sensor. With more light comes more information with which the camera can create a less dark image. That's where Google started - they then brought in the Machine Learning to do some magic.

Pixel 3 Top Shot feature easily available on Pixel 2

Pixel 3 Top Shot feature easily available on Pixel 2

Unlike with the previous Nexus generation, Google’s Pixel phones have features you won’t find in other phones, sometimes including its own older Pixel models. Some of those features do require specific and newer hardware, which is understandable. Some, however, don’t and their exclusivity feels more like a marketing strategy than a technical consideration. One such exclusive Pixel 3 feature is Top Shot and, surprisingly enough, it’s actually dead simple to make it available on last year’s Pixel 2.

Pixel 3 might have a dangerous charging problem

Pixel 3 might have a dangerous charging problem

While the Pixel phone launches have never been perfect, most of the problems they exhibited weren’t exactly critical. Sure, a bluish tint might ruin color accuracy, randomly closing apps might be annoying, and failing to save photos might be downright frustrating and depressing. Recent reports surrounding the Pixel 3, however, are close to becoming physically hazardous. Owners of the smaller phone claim that the phone overheats while charging to the point that the phone shuts down to prevent what could be a disaster.

Pixel 3, 3 XL have memory problems but a fix is on the way

Pixel 3, 3 XL have memory problems but a fix is on the way

It seems that no Pixel phone after the first one is free from some major issue right after it launches. Last year’s storm revolved the bluish tint of the Pixel 2 XL’s (LG-made) OLED screen which Google sort of fixed by letting users adjust their color profiles on their own. This year’s Pixels, both of them, seem to be plagued with memory management issues. One of them, related to the camera, already has a fix. An equally problematic issue, however, will be lingering around a bit longer until Google finally rolls out a patch.

Google Play might’ve just given you a 5-dollar credit

Starting today, Google's giving a bunch of Google Play credit away to everyday users such as yourself. If you happen to have purchased a Google Pixel 3, all the better - there's a separate promotion that's going on right this minute with an additional $2 in the mix. It would seem that it's down to luck whether you get the non-Pixel credit thus far.

Best flagship Android smartphones of 2018

It is done. This year’s Android players have now all shown their hand. With the shopping and holiday seasons fast approaching, it’s also time to make a decision on which of these phones to get. If you’re an Apple fan, the choice is almost clear (though you’ll have to decide between three prices). In Android land, however, you might easily be paralyzed by so many choices. To make that decision-making process a bit easier, here are some of this year’s best high-end smartphones, depending on what kind of experience you’re after.

Google Playground adds cats to AR Pets stickers

Google Playground adds cats to AR Pets stickers

Augmented reality stickers have become quite the attraction on social media, particularly because of the whimsical fun they bring to the table. Or to your face. or to someone else’s actual table. These AR stickers can also be effective vehicles for advocating causes, marketing film franchises, or even just showing your allegiance to one of the biggest debates of all time: dogs versus cats. Google’s new Playground camera mode for the Pixel 3 launched with only dogs under the Pets category. But since it’s National Cat Day, Google is playing fair by adding cats to the scene as well.

This Pixel 3 XL notch glitch is annoyingly funny

As if Google's Pixel 3 XL wasn't notched enough, an oddball bug affecting the Android smartphone is adding a second, even more annoying cut-out to its display. Observed by a number of owners of the 2018 handset, the new notch isn't at the top or bottom as you might expect, but protrudes in from the side.

How to download Pixel Night Sight for your phone now

There's a really awesome feature called Night Sight out in the wild right now for Google-made Pixel phones. This feature isn't yet officially activated, but it was mentioned by Google during its most recent press conference. Lucky for us, we've got one massively talented community over at XDA that's found a way to (fairly simply) activate this feature in the Google Camera app. Now all we've gotta do is download and load.

MKBHD attention on phone’s pink line makes it a priority issue

Like it or not, Marques Brownlee has one whole heck of a lot of eyes and ears on him, and when he's got an issue with a phone, brands pay attention. This week Brownlee (aka MKBHD) posted a Tweet on Twitter about his Google Pixel 3 XL, showing a distinct pink line of pixels running vertically down the near-center. He reported this situation on the 24th of October, and on the 25th of October, he seems to have an answer on why the line appeared.
