5 tips for new Galaxy S8 users: our Day 1 experience

There are several facts that a first-time Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8 Plus user should know when running the device right out the box. What we're doing today is speaking about the pieces of this smartphone that might not be immediately obvious and/or should be addressed before any other part of the phone is either switched on or handled extensively. This device is slightly unusual, and not just because Samsung removed the home button.

Galaxy S8 Bixby button remapping blocked by Samsung

Galaxy S8 Bixby button remapping blocked by Samsung

Samsung has blocked users from remapping the Bixby button on the Galaxy S8 handset, upsetting early buyers who weren't planning on using the Korean company's personal assistant. Bixby, for those unfamiliar, is Samsung's new alternative to Siri and Google Assistant, though users shouldn't expect it to be fully functional upon the handset's launch. Industrious early users figured out how to remap this physical button, and Samsung apparently didn't like that.

That Galaxy S8 Plus with 2x camera may release with Note 8

A Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus 2x camera prototype revealed in a recent leak has been tipped to release later this year. Instead of appearing as the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, this device is said to be moving forward as the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. This shouldn't come as too much of a surprise given the relative size, shape, and features of past Galaxy S and Note releases. Where one goes, the other inevitably follows - with a few bonus features.

Galaxy S8 orders are shipping early at T-Mobile

Galaxy S8 orders are shipping early at T-Mobile

T-Mobile customers who preordered the Samsung Galaxy S8 have been on the receiving end of a nice surprise: the carrier is shipping out the phones a handful of days earlier than it said it would. That's great news for those who can't wait to get ahold of the handset, and it's likely not an accident: the Uncarrier did the same thing with the Galaxy S7. It seems like a calculated -- and very welcomed -- move.

Galaxy S8 Pre-order shipping dates released

Galaxy S8 Pre-order shipping dates released

The wait for the Galaxy S8 is almost over, as it launches in just more than a week. This is a particularly important release given the fact that the Galaxy Note 7 turned out to be a dud, so the Samsung faithful have been waiting quite some time for new (usable) flagship phone. Some of those who pre-ordered a Galaxy S8 might actually see it arrive before the phone's April 21 release, as at least one carrier will be shipping it out early.

What Note 7 fallout? Galaxy S8 preorders are huge

What Note 7 fallout? Galaxy S8 preorders are huge

This morning reports from several sources suggest that preorders for the Samsung Galaxy S8 are well and above those for the Galaxy S7. Last year's Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, says Samsung, have been "outpaced" by those of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus (or S8+, if you prefer) in pre-orders here in the United States. Samsung adds that this outpacing is "with strong double digit growth" to boot.

Galaxy S8 pre-orders break Samsung records in Korea

It would seem that consumers in South Korea aren't shying away from the Galaxy S8 because of the Galaxy Note 7 battery debacle. In just two days, Samsung's new flagship phone has managed to hit 550,000 pre-orders in Korea, surpassing the other flagships that came before it.

This iPhone 8 video shows what Galaxy S8 does right and LG G6 does wrong

It's difficult to say exactly why it is Samsung and Apple dominate the smartphone market - but this video takes a crack at it. What we're looking at is a spinning iPhone 8 concept - a device that's most likely going to come out next year, but commands search terms in Google this year because "iPhone 7s" is too many characters to be bothered typing. What we see here is style - design finesse - a sense of assuredness in the phone's overall excellence. That's what Apple and Samsung have, or appear to have, that most other phone companies lack.

Is a secret Galaxy S8 Pro edition release still being tested?

Is a secret Galaxy S8 Pro edition release still being tested?

This morning a set of images of a Samsung Galaxy S8 dual-camera setup have appeared, right alongside rumors of another final product. This new edition of the device would be launched not long after the initial Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus - if it does end up being released at all. While no finalized name seems to be attached to this smartphone as yet, I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up being sent out as a Galaxy S8 Pro - especially given the possibility of it being released near the iPhone 7s, iPhone 8, and/or iPhone Pro.

Samsung Galaxy S8 facial recognition security is easily fooled

If you're planning to pick up the Galaxy S8 and use facial recognition to secure the handset, think again. A new demonstration of the feature shows it being easily fooled using a photo of the handset's owner, and coinciding with the revelation is word from sources that Samsung allegedly considers the feature as just 'for fun.' The phone also offers fingerprint and iris scanning security.
