A whole bunch of new Microsoft Surface devices are just around the corner, and we're taking a peek at a preliminary list. This set of devices seems to have been leaked to several sources this week. Given Microsoft's seemingly random process of decision making when it comes to new device reveal event dates, now seems as good a time as any!

New Surface Book 2 released with cheaper price

Microsoft is filling in the gaps for buyers on a budget still wanting some Surface style today, with a new, cheaper Surface Book 2 joining the line-up. It follows in the footsteps of the new Surface Laptop that Microsoft also announced this morning, trimming specs to hit a more affordable price-point.

Surface Book 2 15-inch goes up for pre-order in 17 new markets

Surface Book 2 15-inch goes up for pre-order in 17 new markets

The Surface Book 2 is a pretty solid piece of hardware, assuming you've got the money to put down for one. The device is still relatively young, having only launched back in November, and thus far, only its 13-inch models have been available in most regions. That all changes today, as Microsoft has announced that it's bringing the 15-inch Surface Book 2 to 17 new markets.

Surface Book 2 drains battery while gaming even when plugged in

Surface Book 2 drains battery while gaming even when plugged in

Between the two, the Surface Book 2 is supposed to be more powerful than the Surface Pro, whose main selling point is portable productivity. It seems, however, that Microsoft may have artificially leveled the playing field a bit by giving the Surface Book 2 a handicap. Running its own tests, The Verge confirms complaints about battery drain issues when using the Surface Book 2 for graphics-intensive tasks, like gaming, even when it’s connected to the official charger. Reading between the lines of Microsoft’s response, it is all by design.

Surface Book 2 iFixit teardown unsurprisingly scores low

Surface Book 2 iFixit teardown unsurprisingly scores low

It might be a depressing future for third-party repair centers, but we’re seeing a strong trend among devices year after year. They are becoming more integrated, more compact, and harder to take apart. Granted, unlike desktops, smartphones and tablets usually aren’t designed to be upgradeable and OEMs naturally frown on unauthorized (and therefore unprofitable for them) repairs. So it is really no surprise that the new Surface Book 2, a half step up from the first model two years ago, scored very low on iFixit’s repairability scale. The one saving grace is that it didn’t do worse than the Surface Laptop.

Surface Book 2 Review (15-inch): The MacBook Pro eater

Surface Book 2 Review (15-inch): The MacBook Pro eater

If you were crafting a recipe for the perfect performance notebook, the Surface Book 2 15-inch wouldn't be a bad place to start. Microsoft's move to "lead by example" in Windows 10 laptops still wows, with its detachable screen and crisp, premium hardware, even two years after its original debut. Still, for all its battery life and design cred, the Surface Book wasn't perfect. Embracing USB-C, a larger 15-inch screen, and some of the beefiest specifications this side of a gaming PC, the Surface Book 2 sets out to give Apple some nightmares.

Surface Book 2 pre-order has begun

Surface Book 2 pre-order has begun

It has mostly been all about smartphones these past months, but Microsoft, unsurprisingly, still doesn’t have one. Instead, it has chosen to focus on its Surface line of portable computers instead, despite how analysts and observers are claiming they are on the way out. Just last month, it unveiled the Surface Book 2, which was thought would actually never come to pass. Now it is doing one better, by making the souped-up 2-in-1 laptop available for pre-order, promising that it isn’t an empty promise at all.

Surface Book 2 hands-on: 13.5″ and 15″ take fight to Apple

Microsoft has just unveiled the Surface Book 2, and it's pulling no punches as it targets Apple's MacBook Pro. Packing new processors for as much as twice the power of Apple's flagship notebooks, there's now not just one 2-in-1 but two. Joining the existing 13.5-inch model is a brand new 15-inch Surface Book 2.

This leaked memo just made Microsoft vs Consumer Reports fascinating

This leaked memo just made Microsoft vs Consumer Reports fascinating

Microsoft's war over Surface reliability with Consumer Reports has taken another unexpected turn, with leaks suggesting a combination of ambition and inexperience led to higher than expected return rates. The two companies came head to head last week, after Consumer Reports took the unexpected decision to strip Microsoft's Surface Book and Surface Laptop of their "recommended" ratings, in addition to warning buyers off the Surface Pro 4. That was down to the worrying results of a survey which suggested Microsoft's laptops and tablets were the least reliable in the industry.

Microsoft fires back at Consumer Reports’ Surface slight

Microsoft fires back at Consumer Reports’ Surface slight

Microsoft has pushed back at Consumer Reports' decision to strip the Surface range of its "recommended" award, arguing that its actual reliability is much better than was claimed. Consumer Reports had previously granted both the Surface Laptop and the Surface Book its coveted recommendation, based on factors such as performance and design. However, it backtracked after surveys of existing Surface owners reported significantly higher problems with their laptops and tablets compared to the rest of the industry.

Microsoft Surface vs Consumer Reports: What you need to know

Microsoft Surface vs Consumer Reports: What you need to know

Microsoft might be reconsidering its Consumer Reports subscription today, with the news that the Surface Laptop and Surface Book have both been stripped of their "recommended" status. Concerns about reliability of the Surface line-up as a whole have prompted the review organization to backtrack on its awards, in addition to suggesting that the Surface Pro shouldn't be among your top considerations for a 2-in-1 hybrid, either. Microsoft is suitably outraged, as you'd expect, and indeed there are some big questions around just what Consumer Reports is testing and how they're doing that.
