iMessage is not Android’s problem

iMessage is not Android’s problem

Your mother has sent you and your sister a photo of their dog, and expects you to reply with a positive note back. But you have an Android device and you're using Google Voice. You get the message, but you don't get the photo. Your mom gets mad that you've not replied. You say it's because she's using iMessage and photos and videos won't be sent to devices unless they also have iMessage. She tells you to get iMessage. You can't get iMessage, you have an Android device. You see where this is going.

New iPhone 5se details tipped for Spring release

New iPhone 5se details tipped for Spring release

Apple is tipped to be releasing a new iPhone this spring, well before the traditional timeframe for a smartphone in the company's main line. This device would be called the iPhone 5se, coming with a design that's not entirely unlike the iPhone 6, sized closer to an iPhone 5, and coming with Live Photos to boot. This device would also work with the same cameras as delivered in the iPhone 6 (not the iPhone 6s). This new iPhone would likely fit in place below the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, replacing the ghost of the iPhone 5s in the process.

HTC One A9 vs iPhone, a brief history

HTC One A9 vs iPhone, a brief history

At the launch of the HTC One A9, it was suggested that this newest HTC smartphone looked a whole lot like the most recent design for the iPhone. At the release of the iPhone 6, the same was said about Apple's design looking very similar to the then-most-recent HTC smartphone release. At this crossroads of confusion, today we're having a look at a brief history of smartphone releases from both companies, as captured over the last several years. Is it one company, or the other, or are we steadily heading toward smartphone design singularity?

iOS 9: how to download, when to expect

iOS 9: how to download, when to expect

Apple has released its new software for iPhone and iPad and you might be asking yourself: "how do I upgrade to iOS 9?" Well let us tell you! It's pretty easy, actually. For most people the iOS 9 upgrade will pop up automatically. Tapping a couple buttons is all you'll need to do. For other, less patient users - like yourself - you'll have only to tap a couple more buttons than the rest. Once they're pressed, you'll only need to sit back, relax, and think about what you've done.

iOS 9 will work with your old iPhone

iOS 9 will work with your old iPhone

Apple's next iPhone and iPad software tipped to focus on quality, will work on older devices. Word this week is that the next operating system suite for Apple mobile and desktop machines will be aimed at delivering a highest-quality experience to the user. Not that Apple products with iOS or OS X didn't promise this before, but this round it's suggested that every product released over the past several years will be getting onboard with the same top-notch quality experience, working well top to bottom.

FLIR C2 and ONE thermal camera for iPhone and Android hands-on

FLIR C2 and ONE thermal camera for iPhone and Android hands-on

Two devices are coming from the team at FLIR Systems that will allow thermal imaging to be put into the hands of consumers this year. That means seeing the heat around you - like a Predator - through your smartphone. One device is a camera attachment for your smart device - iOS or Android - the other is a self-contained thermal imaging device - its own camera. This second device goes by the name "FLIR C2", a Thermal Camera that's small enough to fit in your pocket - like a smartphone but made for thermal imaging alone.

Phones 4U liquidation may bend Apple’s pricing rules

Phones 4U liquidation may bend Apple’s pricing rules

It would appear that Apple's regular relatively strict controls on pricing for iPhones and iPads will have little to no baring on the liquidation of Phone 4U. This mobile device company was kicked to the curb earlier this year - right before the release of the iPhone 6. In fact the company saw some extra controversy when it was discovered that Phone 4U wouldn't be issuing refunds on iPhone 6 pre-orders. Now we'll go ahead and assume that the owners of Phones 4U either don't expect to work with Apple ever again OR that Apple's rules for sales don't apply to a situation like this.

Apple Watch doubted like iPhone: launch may be massive

Apple Watch doubted like iPhone: launch may be massive

Morgan Stanley isn't pulling any shots with their investor notes on the release of the Apple Watch in 2015. The industry view is cautious, they say, cautious just like they were before the launch of the iPhone in 2007. Cautious, they say, just like the industry was before the launch of the iPad in 2010. With the "wearables" industry ramping up a lot quicker than the smartphone or tablet industry ever did, Morgan Stanley says Apple will be able to sell an Apple Watch to 1 out of every 10 iPhone users.

iOS 8 Jailbreak Pangu expands to Mac

iOS 8 Jailbreak Pangu expands to Mac

This week the folks at Pangu have expanded their jailbreaking software for iOS 8 to Mac. Before now, their jailbreaking solution worked just fine - just so long as you had a Windows PC to use it. Now you'll be able to use your Apple computer which, if you're a die-hard Mac user like most iPhone owners are, you'll have been waiting for. All of this hacking action is at your own risk, of course. You'll need to use all caution and understand the risks before you do anything.

iOS 8.1 Jailbreak released for iPhone, iPad

iOS 8.1 Jailbreak released for iPhone, iPad

While the iOS 8 Jailbreaking universe was a mixed bag of oddities, many creators stuck in Beta mode for many moons, iOS 8.1 ready right off the blocks. This entirely un-authorized look at iOS 8.1 comes from the folks at Team Pangu. That’s inside China - and a good indicator of how awesome it’s going to be having China onboard with the iOS Jailbreaking game from now on. This Jailbreak also works on iOS 8.0 right out the gate. And you CAN get English instructions if you don't read Chinese.

Apple holds $50m axe over surprise-spoiling suppliers

GT Advanced Technologies is currently firing on all cylinders in light of their bankruptcy filing earlier this month. One of the most interesting bits of data that’ve come out of the bankruptcy investigation is Apple’s non-disclosure agreement, and the $50 million dollar penalty the company imposes for product or information leaks. Lawyers representing GT are arguing that they need to reveal additional information about their close relationship with Apple "in the interests of creditors and shareholders."
