Bad LG phone sales figures are good for Android

Bad LG phone sales figures are good for Android

LG's mobile division reported a loss of over $700 million USD in the whole of the year 2018 - but that might not be a bad thing. LG is set up in a way in which they can lose money in one division and still make enough money in another to make up the difference. And that's just what they've done, with record revenue numbers overall - a whopping $54.4 billion for the year 2018. Here's why that's good for you, the smartphone user.

My favorite phone of 2018

My favorite phone of 2018

This year I reviewed a lot of phones and test-drove more than I reviewed. Some phones, like the phone I'm about to write about, I got the opportunity to use at a time that was well after the usual reasonable window of opportunity for reviewing a smartphone. I got the LG V35 ThinQ at a time at which the LG V40 ThinQ was about to be released and the LG G7 ThinQ was already on the market. So why, you might think to yourself, why on earth would I pick the LG V35, of all phones, as my favorite smartphone of the year?

LG V40 details leak in full 5K video

LG V40 details leak in full 5K video

The LG V40 ThinQ is one step closer to reality with a leak of the rendering kind. This leak comes from the user known as OnLeaks, a notoriously accurate renderer of CAD files. These files come to case-makers and accessory makers in the weeks before the launch of a smartphone, and are ocassionally acquired by people like OnLeaks in the process. What you see is a set of renderings made using those CAD plans.

LG V40 leaks, but is it legit?

LG V40 leaks, but is it legit?

Today we're having a peek at the LG V40 in a leak that might be real - but might be a little sloppy. What we've got is a set of renderings that has a lot of the trappings of a real deal release from LG. What we're suspicious of is the placement of a couple of the elements. Let's look at what's right and what might be wrong.

LG V40 ThinQ is still coming in three months

LG V40 ThinQ is still coming in three months

In the past 11 months, there have actually been three V series phones launched by LG: the V30, the V30S ThinQ, and, most recently, the V35 ThinQ. Four if you count the exclusive V30+. Not bad for a smartphone maker reported to be girding its loins due to quarter after quarter of losses. LG, however, is far from done. Unsurprisingly, there is still the 2018 V series flagship coming, unsurprisingly called the LG V40, and it will also unsurprisingly bear the ThinQ AI brand.

Unlocked LG G7 ThinQ is coming soon to all US carriers

If you look at all the premium phones LG has put out the past 6 or so months, you might think it has been pretty busy. Look closer, however, and you’ll discover mere iterations of an existing model. That, of course, isn’t stopping LG, which is probably good for its fans. Even better for its fans, its latest semi-flagship might not remain exclusive to AT&T and Google Project Fi for long. That is if this official product listing is any indication.

Top smartphones of Q2 2018: where things stand

The year is half over and we’ve mostly seen all that year has to offer as far as smartphones go. Except, of course, for Apple new iPhones and Samsung’s last hurrah for the year. We already took a look at the premium phones that landed in the market in the first few months of the year and was admittedly at a loss for which one came out at the top. This quarter has its own roster with seemingly interesting personalities. Will a winner finally stand out? Let’s take a look.

LG V35 ThinQ: skip it except for one reason

LG V35 ThinQ: skip it except for one reason

LG has a very odd strategy this year. It delayed the launch of its flagship phone, the LG G7 ThinQ but has littered the market with LG V30 variants. And, not so surprisingly, it wasn't done yet. It just announced the LG V35 ThinQ, whose spec sheet looks eerily familiar. Compared to the V30 and V30S ThinQ, it's definitely an upgrade. But in light of the company's G series flagship, it is a confusing option that's almost telling users in their faces that they'll have to pay extra just to get rid of a much debated design.

Looks like Project Fi has the LG V35 ThinQ too

Right after AT&T suggested they had exclusive access to the LG V35 ThinQ, Google weighed in with a different message. According to Google, Project Fi also has the LG V35 ThinQ, and the LG G7 ThinQ too - and also the Motorola-made Moto G6. That's three new devices for Project Fi, all at the same time.
