Some phones, like the phone I'm about to write about, I got the opportunity to use at a time that was well after the usual reasonable window of opportunity for reviewing a smartphone. The LG V40 ThinQ is one step closer to reality with a leak of the rendering kind. This leak comes from the user known as OnLeaks, a notoriously accurate renderer of CAD files. These files come to case-makers and accessory makers in the weeks before the launch of a smartphone, and are ocassionally acquired by people like OnLeaks in the process. What you see is a set of renderings made using those CAD plans.

In the past 11 months, there have actually been three V series phones launched by LG: the V30, the V30S ThinQ, and, most recently, the V35 ThinQ. Four if you count the exclusive V30+. Not bad for a smartphone maker reported to be girding its loins due to quarter after quarter of losses. LG, however, is far from done. Unsurprisingly, there is still the 2018 V series flagship coming, unsurprisingly called the LG V40, and it will also unsurprisingly bear the ThinQ AI brand.

If you look at all the premium phones LG has put out the past 6 or so months, you might think it has been pretty busy. Look closer, however, and you’ll discover mere iterations of an existing model. That, of course, isn’t stopping LG, which is probably good for its fans. Even better for its fans, its latest semi-flagship might not remain exclusive to AT&T and Google Project Fi for long. Two new Project Fi phones have gone up for preorder, with a pair of Android handsets from LG's latest line-up joining Google's carrier. The LG G7 ThinQ and LG V35 ThinQ have both been added to Google's roster of "Fi-friendly phones," offering an alternative to the Pixel 2 XL.

LG has a very odd strategy this year. It delayed the launch of its flagship phone, the LG G7 ThinQ but has littered the market with LG V30 variants. And, not so surprisingly, it wasn't done yet. It just announced the LG V35 ThinQ, whose spec sheet looks eerily familiar. Compared to the V30 and V30S ThinQ, it's definitely an upgrade. But in light of the company's G series flagship, it is a confusing option that's almost telling users in their faces that they'll have to pay extra just to get rid of a much debated design.

Right after AT&T suggested they had exclusive access to the LG V35 ThinQ, Google weighed in with a different message. According to Google, Project Fi also has the LG V35 ThinQ, and the LG G7 ThinQ too - and also the Motorola-made Moto G6. That's three new devices for Project Fi, all at the same time.
