Power Rangers movie gets dark & serious in debut trailer

The New York Comic-Con is being held this weekend, and movie studio Lionsgate has used the event to premiere the first trailer for the upcoming Power Rangers movie. The two and a half-minute video does a great job of setting up the superhero story many of us watched on TV growing up. Many of the familiar elements are there, including the group of five outcast/troublemaking teens that discover a meteorite and gain powers. However, it's clear the goofiness of the early '90s show has been replaced by Zack Snyder-influenced levels of serious darkness.

Google Comics Bubble Zoom makes digital books unique

Google Comics Bubble Zoom makes digital books unique

This week the folks at Google have taken their Google Books platform to a new level at SDCC. Comic books - those participating in the project - will be coming alive (so to speak) with a service called Bubble Zoom. This feature will allow portions of each comic page to zoom and grow when a user's finger moves overhead. This could make the entire medium change and inspire comic artists to change the way they create comics. If nothing else, this feature will certainly make each page pop.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E.’s Comic-Con trailer is pitch-perfect

The Man from U.N.C.L.E.’s Comic-Con trailer is pitch-perfect

Rebooting a 60s franchise without slipping into camp or cliché is tricky, but it seems 2015's The Man from U.N.C.L.E. may well manage it. The Guy Ritchie spy film has been more than a little overshadowed by the usual roster of superhero blockbusters, but if the latest five minute trailer for the movie from Comic-Con 2015 is anything to go by, it could be a safer bet for your theater dollars. Set during the 1960s, it brings together the best of US and Russian secret agents to foil a nuclear bomb plot.
