Mio Navman Spirit TV V735 and V505 digital TV PNDs announced

Mio have released the first TV-enabled satnav units in the UK, the Mio Navman Spirit TV.  First shown at the launch of the Spirit range back in May, the Spirit TV will be available in two versions - the 4.7-inch V505 and the 7-inch V735 - each with a touchscreen, Google search, TruMap and Junction views and of course Freeview digital TV with autotuning.

iriver have announced a new PMP, the NV Classic, which not only handles your multimedia playback but also includes a DMB digital TV and radio tuner and GPS navigation.  The iriver NV Classic measures 181 x 120 x 21.5 mm and is fronted by a 7-inch WVGA 800 x 480 touchscreen and the company's "Magazine" UI.

Of all the software brought out to demonstrate the developing capabilities of Apple iPhone OS 3.0, the most interesting has to be TomTom's turn-by-turn navigation app.  Both a software app and an accompanying car kit were announced, complete with Points Of Interest (POIs) and both 2D and 3D mapping.

Sony planning Android Walkman and PND for 2010?

According to the latest “open secret” in Japan, Sony are working on a Walkman and a satnav PND that would each use Google’s Android OS.  Expected to hit the market in 2010, full details about each device are unknown, beyond that Sony seem to be hoping to use the open-source platform for a range of future products.

TwoNav Aventura PND with custom mapping provision

If you've ever looked at your PND and thought "I could draw maps better than these" - usually when you've just driven the wrong way down a one-way street - then TwoNav's Aventura could be for you.  Based around a 3.5-inch touchscreen and SiRFstar III GPS chipset, the Aventura does the usual automotive directions complete with Tele Atlas maps, but what makes it special is its flexibility to use custom or DIY mapping data.

According to TwoNav, the Aventura will "use any kind of map without problem of compatibility."  That means you can load any number of vector maps or raster imagery, such as satellite photos, or digital elevation models, 3D landscapes, pretty much anything that can be scanned in and calibrated.

Mio Navman Spirit PNDs, plus 7-inch TV PND hands-on [Video]

MiTAC Mio today announced a new range of Navman PNDs, together with previewing an upcoming 7-inch touchscreen PND with integrated digital TV tuner that's expected to drop sometime over the summer.  First to reach the market will be the Mio Navman Spirit S300, S500 and Flat, each with integrated traffic receivers, touchscreen GUIs and text-to-speech directions.  Mio have also thrown in their latest "Spirit" UI, which supports kinetic scrolling, and keyword search based on Google technology.

Navigon pull PND business from US

Navigon have announced their intention to withdraw from the US satnav market, citing the "difficult economic environment" and "aggressive pricing".  Despite describing the exit as potentially temporary, Navigon CEO Egon Minar did confirm that the company's Chicago office has seen a "significant number" of job losses; those that remain on will operate as a skeleton support staff "to fulfill all obligations to our existing PND customers in terms of map update[s], etc."

Magellan may not have made much fanfare of their new RoadMate GPS units, but that hasn't stopped Amazon from putting the first up for sale.  The Magellan RoadMate 1470 has a 4.7-inch wide-aspect touchscreen and supports multi-destination routing, highway lane assist and optional Traffic Link updates.
