On top of that, it has introduced a new usage mode for its DJI Spark camera, allowing users to easily take panoramic photos and share them with friends.

DJI Spark drones will be bricked if firmware isn’t updated soon

DJI Spark drones will be bricked if firmware isn’t updated soon

DJI is giving Spark owners until September 1 to update their drone or deal with having it bricked. The move leaves no room for negotiation, instead forcing owners to update posthaste or lose the ability to operate their Spark. Why such a drastic tactic to force updates? Because the drones are reportedly vulnerable to dropping out of the air, putting those on the ground at risk.

DJI drones are getting an internet off-switch for privacy

Drone-maker DJI has added a new offline mode for privacy-minded pilots, cutting its quadcopters' internet connection for more surreptitious flights. The new Local Data Mode comes, DJI says, after repeated requests from enterprise and government pilots for a setting which would limit communications to just those between the drone and the controller. It comes amid security precautions by the US Army that saw DJI's aircraft grounded.

DJI Spark camera update adds gesture-controlled video

DJI's Spark drone has gained a host of new camera abilities, with the "flying camera" getting a fresh firmware update today. The Spark, launched back in May 2017, is DJI's most affordable and compact model, but also promises to be the company's most easily controlled. That's courtesy of many of the drone's features being gesture controlled, something DJI has built upon with this new firmware.

The DJI Spark needs to be more than a floating selfie-stick

The DJI Spark needs to be more than a floating selfie-stick

The dirty secret about drones is that they generally take some practice to fly well. We're not talking "sit in front of the TV and master the latest console game" practice, either: you need a big open space, no trees to crash into, and enough daylight to see what you're doing. That's before you get to flexing your camera-operator skills. Not for nothing do the drone videography pros generally have two people at the controls: one piloting, and the other operating the gimbal.

Indeed, once it's powered-on and it takes off from your palm, it automatically starts watching for instructions.

DJI will restrict drones that aren’t activated after new update

DJI has announced that drone operators with one of its aerial vehicles will experience restricted operation if they update to the latest firmware or software but fail to properly activate the product afterward. This is part of a 'new application process' the company detailed over the weekend, saying that it applies to all of its customers except those located in China. Failing to update will cause camera streaming to be disabled and more.

Seagate DJI Fly Drive brings 2TB and a drone-friendly microSD slot

In early January, Seagate and DJI announced a new partnership between the two companies that would result in storage solutions for drone operators. Today we're seeing the first of those products, the new joint-branded Seagate DJI Fly Drive, a portable storage drive with a microSD card slot. The drive is available in capacities up to 2TB, and most notably it contains a microSD card slot for shuttling videos from a drone's camera (such as one from DJI) to the Seagate drive itself.
