ExxonMobil’s SpeedPass+ brings mobile payments to Ford SYNC 3 and Apple Watch

Back in January, ExxonMobil announced that its SpeedPass+ app would soon support mobile payments through Ford's SYNC 3 infotainment system. It looks like that update is going live today, but it's bringing more than SYNC 3 functionality with it. ExxonMobil is also launching an Apple Watch version of SpeedPass+ today, meaning those of you with Apple's smartwatch will be able to take advantage of these new features as well.

Ford boosts its smart functionality and connectivity technologies this week with a new MyFord Mobile app extension and SYNC 3's release in North America. Ford suggested this afternoon that the MyFord Mobile app extension would be coming soon "for smartwatches," including Android Wear and eventually very likely the Apple Watch as well. Ford's news in the in-car infotainment environment included a confirmation of which vehicles the SYNC 3 system would be debuting in inside North America. These systems work with AppLink as well.

This week the folks at Ford have revealed their grand re-design of Sync. This is their in-car infotainment and control center software, and this release will be called Sync 3. The big departure comes in Ford's ending of their relationship for software here with Microsoft - Sync and Sync 2 were made with Microsoft - and picking up of BlackBerry's in-car software system QNX. This means touchscreen capabilities, at last, as well as a user interface that's far more recognizable to the smartphone-using age than previous Sync releases.

This week Ford has made it clear that they're pushing forward with the app connection between their vehicles and apps of all kinds, not least of these being Amazon's Cloud Player. This new integration works with Ford's SYNC AppLink, here appearing with voice commands so you'll be able to switch through songs and albums by speaking commands out loud. This release was joined by apps such as Glympse for navigation and point-of-interest locating as well as SINA (weibo.com) for instant updates for microblogging, news, and weather overseas.
