Gamer gives up the dream, selling collection of 3,000+ titles across 20 consoles

Call it what you will, but sometimes it just becomes necessary to give up one's hobby. That seems to be the reality one video game fan is facing, as they're selling a collection of 3,133 titles that span 20 different consoles, most of which are included, all in good to excellent condition. With games ranging from the original NES all the way to the PlayStation 3, including rarities from the Turbo GrafX 16, Atari Jaguar, and Panasonic 3DO, the full collection seems to have taken a lifetime to put together.

Emulator gives 2D NES games some depth, literally

Emulator gives 2D NES games some depth, literally

Ever wondered how your classic two-dimensional games would look like in 3D but didn't really want them converted to full 3D? Well, wonder no more. A new kind of emulator is apparently in development that does the seemingly magical but also most likely grueling work of directly taking old 2D games and adding some 3D depth to them, making games like Super Mario, Mega Man, and Contra pop out, almost literally. While it doesn't change the gameplay, it definitely adds a new dimension to the games.

Popular NES “shooter” Duck Hunt gets an unofficial VR remix

Popular NES “shooter” Duck Hunt gets an unofficial VR remix

Back in the days of the NES (Famicom in other parts of the world), there were already shooting games. But not quite like the FPS titles of today. With the limitations of technology back then, most of those games were limited to billboard and arcade types of gameplay. But at least they had a (light) gun! One of the most popular to hit the cartridges was Duck Hunt. With the new dawn of virtual reality, it just seemed fitting to give an homage to the title, which is exactly what New Jersey Institute of Techonology student Joseph Delgado did.

8-player NES Super Mario Bros projects gameplay in 360 degrees

A group of researchers from Swiss university ETH Zurich teamed up with none other than Disney on a project that resulted in a 8-player version of Super Mario Bros. running on a Nintendo Entertainment System and played through a 360-degree projection system. If that weren't hard enough to believe, the NES console wasn't hacked or modded in any way, and it was running a standard game cartridge, also in original condition.

NES Celebrates 30th Anniversary

30 years ago this week, the US was introduced to the Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES for short. This was Nintendo's first home console, and as we all know, it was a game-changer. The console launched with 18 games, and supported two controllers, a light gun, and a loveable robot named R.O.B.

Megaman X, X2 played at the same time with same controller

Megaman X, X2 played at the same time with same controller

Some people have some insane skills. Some have an insane amount of time in their hands. And some are probably just insane. We still don't know under which category this latest YouTube gaming feat falls under, but it might as well be "all of the above". Not finding enough challenge in the Mega Man X and X2 games, YouTube user Aura Puffs took it upon himself to beat the game using the same controller, but not one after the other but at the very same time.

90s Oldsmobile almost had a car with an embedded NES

90s Oldsmobile almost had a car with an embedded NES

There is an old phrase that goes something like "boys and their toys", and what would better qualify as "toys" than games and cars. Back in the 90s, those games would be from the consoles of that generation, particular the Nintendo Entertainment System or NES, also known as the Family Computer or Famicom in some regions. Around that time as well, a now defunct car maker almost put out a car that would have been a gamer's game come true, one that had the gaming console built right into it.

DarNES: the insane implementation of Netflix on an NES

DarNES: the insane implementation of Netflix on an NES

Some people really just have a lot of time, or ideas, or both, in their hands. We've seen a lot of games lately that have tried to incorporate that classic 8 or 16 bit design into their graphics for the sake of simplicity, art, and nostalgia. But Netflix engineers Guy Cirino, Alex Wolfe and Carenina Motion wanted to take things even further. What if they could cram today's streaming content into that same retro experience. And they didn't stop at trying to emulate just the graphics. They actually worked on running Netflix on a NES console.

Impossibly difficult Super Mario cheat glitch pulled off

Impossibly difficult Super Mario cheat glitch pulled off

The classics are making a comeback, and in more ways than one. Super Mario, one of the most beloved gaming franchises in the world, is back in the press, not because of a hot new game or a retro old game, but because of how people are stretching the game beyond what the developers intended. Like giving it a brain to play itself. Now a high-profile YouTuber is earning views because of how he managed to hit a very intricate glitch that let him finish Super Mario World in just 6 minute, without facing the final boss.

Nintendo games go 3D with FCEUX hack

If you're in the mood for some next-generation action on your past-generation emulated games, a fellow by the name of plotor has just the bit for you. What this hacker/developer has done is to create a rather simple modification for the game emulator FCEUX.
