Electric scooter startup Gogoro is spreading to France, with Paris the next city to get its Coup network of battery-swappable, on-demand EVs. 600 of the Gogoro Smartscooters will be set loose on Parisian streets, the company says. While Paris is no stranger to two-wheeled transportation - indeed, Gogoro points out, it's one of the top scooter cities in the world - it hasn't seen anything quite like Coup.

The folks at the electric battery and scooter company Gogoro have announced a new round of investments from Panasonic and the National Development Fund of Taiwan. Both of these investors are significant, as one provides battery tech for the company, and the other is part of the government of the country in which Gogoro's first release of electric scooters has taken place. There, in Taipei, Gogoro's pilot market has taken off with flying colors.

Gogoro gets go-going: First EV scooter pilots revealed

Four things to know about the Gogoro electric scooter

Gogoro made an impact at CES this year, with their electric scooter concept taking shape. But what is Gogoro? Is it a simple plug-in scooter you’ll be able to slip around the neighborhood in, or is it more? Attempting to set a precedent for what’s next for scooters, Gogoro follows the lad of auto manufacturers like Tesla, who are aiming to reduce our dependency on oil. Like Tesla, Gogoro depends on battery technology, and may need a little clarity added to the conversation surrounding it. Here are four points to keep in mind about Gogoro.

Gogoro Smartscooter is Tesla for the everyman

Last we heard of Gogoro, the mysterious startup was promising a new age of batteries for mobility in smart cities, and clutching a sheaf of patents to that effect: now, we know what it’s been working on. The Gogoro Smartscooter and its companion Gogoro Energy Network - essentially a city-wide infrastructure of charging stations for easily-swapped battery packs, offering up to 60 miles range - has been fully announced at CES 2015 today, but I caught up with the company ahead of time to find out why the founders think this is far, far broader than just urban transport.
