New Apple TV to hit Apple Stores this Friday too

Apple broke the news on Monday that the new, 4th generation Apple TV was available for pre-order on its website, and deliveries could be expected as early as Friday, October 30th. Unfortunately, Apple declined to mention when streaming video fans would be able to get their hands on the set-top box in stores. Well, according to several Apple Store retail employees who spoke to 9to5Mac, eager buys will be able to pick one up in person on Friday as well.

One Australian has come up with a brilliant way of being one of the first in line to buy the new iPhone 6s, but not need to waste several days standing in front of the Apple Store. Lucy Kelly has a telepresence robot, which is basically an iPad on a mini Segway, holding her place fourth in line at the Sydney Apple Store. Kelly uses an app to broadcast her face on the tablet, while also allowing her to communicate with anyone standing nearby.

Apple Watch drops appointment requirement for store try-ons

Now that all the hoopla surrounding the Apple Watch's debut has settled down, with Apple now directly selling the smartwatch in its retail stores, the company has made a similar change to its policies of try-ons. Customers no longer need to schedule an appointment in advance to try on the Apple Watch, which meant picking a specific store, time, and providing an Apple ID. When the Watch first went on sale in April, appointment were required for try-ons, and sales were limited to Apple's online store.

Apple redesigns website, combining store and product pages

You might not notice it right away, but Apple has launched a fairly substantial redesign to its website. There is no longer a dedicated online store section to the website. The "store" tab has been removed from the main navigation bar, and the address "store.apple.com" now redirects to the homepage. Does this mean Apple doesn't want people buying things from them online anymore? Nope, they've just added a dedicated "Buy" button to the top of each product page.

While many have been left wondering what happened to Apple's annual Back to School promotion, last week retail chief Angela Ahrendts promised an update, and here it is: Those who qualify for the education pricing discount and buy an eligible Mac will get a free pair of the Beats Solo2 headphones. Unfortunately for potential iPad customers, no part of the promo applies to tablet purchases, unlike the last few years. The offer is not yet highlighted on Apple's website, but begins today, July 23rd in retail stores, and on August 6th on the online store.

Online services including the Apple Store and iTunes experience outages across all app and media sales outlets. This outage approximately 9:00 AM Central Time and ramped up over the next several hours. Downed service checkers have seen troubles appearing mainly in the United States and in central Europe as well as Japan. Service troubles have been acknowledged by Apple System Status ticker as well, with a general "some users are affected" status appearing this morning. iPhone: AT&T 2-year contract no longer available at Apple Stores

About two weeks ago it was reported that US carrier AT&T was going to begin moving away from 2-year contracts on smartphones it offers, instead trying to push customers to sign up for its AT&T Next plan. The change was predicted to begin on June 1st, and while it's a few days late, it appears that's what AT&T is now doing, starting with iPhones sold at Apple Stores. As of today, purchasing an iPhone on AT&T from Apple will require users to choose AT&T Next.
