5 names for iPhone 8 : What'll Apple call it?

Apple's next event will reveal the names of their new iPhone collection – and today we're discussing the most mysterious. The iPhone 8, we've been calling it – but since Apple hasn't officially acknowledged its existence, it's not quite official. It's had a few names over the past few months, like iPhone X or iPhone Pro – and all the way back a year ago it was already being prophesied as the iPhone 10, Anniversary Edition. Today we're getting down to business.

5. iPhone X

This name "X" comes largely from the classic placeholder for the number or term which we do not yet know. I'm reminded of Malcolm X explaining why his name is as it was – and the "X" represented the unknown. It makes sense, here, but it doesn't work so well in Google searches – it just ends up leading to iPhone X-Ray news articles.

4. iPhone 10th Anniversary Edition

There've been rumors of a very special iPhone coming this year for the past several years. Using it now makes sense too – but it's less likely Apple will put any major focus on the fact that it's the 10th anniversary of the first iPhone. It's more likely they'll focus on the display – which will be the first OLED display (more than likely) since the iPhone was born.

3. iPhone Clear

Something like Pepsi Clear – with a name that's just as transparent. In reality – here in the real world – there actually was somewhat of a rumor, or more like analysis, that said the next big iPhone would be sort of transparent. Look at this post and know that the original source of the odd collection of iPhone predictions has changed perspectives.

Instead of the iPhone 8 being a "clear piece of glass", he more recently suggested that with AR, the iPhone 8 will effectively seem like a piece of glass. Like a window into a different universe – that's what AR is when run properly. Have a peek at my article Apple's next big thing is not an iPhone to learn more about how AR is going to blow up.

2. iPhone Pro

I liked this name back when the rumors pointed toward the same smart-connector pins that the iPad Pro uses. But that's long since gone – and an iPhone remains a device with which users send Snaps, not a place where they edit video and control massive multi-million dollar camera setups. Have a peek at our Apple's Road to iPhone Pro from June of 2016 – it's an interesting bit of history that shows how we got where we are now, too.

1. iPhone 8

It makes sense to call this next-edition iPhone the iPhone 8 only if the other two devices (rumored) are called iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus. If Apple decides to call this new model something like iPhone 8 while the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus stay largely the same as they are in their "7" form, the pricing structure will hold tight.

That is, no more iPhone SE – or the iPhone SE sees an eventual phase-out – while the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus take the bottom two positions on the totem poll. Just imagine Tim Cook coming out to say "We were going to wait another year to release the iPhone 8, but we just couldn't help ourselves. We're really excited about this device, I think you're really going to like it, too."
