Has Casual Gaming Killed the AAA Blockbuster Console Game?

Has Casual Gaming Killed the AAA Blockbuster Console Game?

The sheer amount of excitement surrounding Titanfall is enough to annoy any old-school, crotchety gamer like me who has watched the mighty fall and the seemingly insignificant rise. Titanfall supporters would have us believe that it's the next big franchise that will change the way we game for the next decade. And without a doubt, it'll perform well on store shelves at first. But whether the game will have the longevity to be a top-end title and franchise for the foreseeable future remains in doubt.

I don't say all of this because I don't think Titanfall could be a great game or that I have something against blockbuster titles. I've just come to realize over the last couple of years that the days of AAA blockbuster console games truly revolutionizing the way we play games might be dead.

This week as the Titanfall Beta gameplay comes to a close, the one group of users not able to play the game thus far comes to the forefront: Xbox 360 users. These ravenous users of the past generation’s Microsoft-made console have been rumbling about the release date for the Xbox 360 version of Titanfall being later than the Xbox One / PC - that date is March 25th, mind you, while the Xbox One and PC will see the game released on the 11th. Turns out Respawn Entertainment (behind Titanfall for PC and Xbox One) are working closely with Bluepoint Games (developers behind Xbox 360 version) to make certain the game is delivered at top-notch quality.

Titanfall: Xbox One vs PC

Titanfall: Xbox One vs PC

After having played the Titanfall Beta on both the Xbox One and PC (via Origin on Windows 8), we’ve come to one conclusion. If you want to play Titanfall on your Xbox One, we’d recommend simply skipping the demo of the PC side of things. Titanfall Beta codes use extended: servers down time to thank

It would appear that the Titanfall servers bug was a big enough issue over the past 24 hours or so to warrant an extension of the Beta time for users in the long run. The Titanfall Beta has been extended "at least a day".

Titanfall Beta servers down: Microsoft working on fix

This afternoon servers are in short supply for the Titanfall Beta, owing to a bug rather than to a final limitation for the game. According to Respawn Entertainment developer Jon Shiring, Microsoft is both aware of the bug and is working on a fix right this minute. You'll encounter this situation in gameplay when you see the message "no servers found."

UPDATE: With servers back to normal, mostly, Respawn Entertainment decided to make this Closed Beta an Open Beta for everyone starting just one day after launch!

It's Titanfall Beta day - and also Valentine's Day - but mostly Titanfall Beta day, and you're going to find one whole heck of a lot of people today looking for codes.
