Apple’s HomePod delay is the right decision

Apple’s HomePod delay is the right decision

Apple may be missing the holiday shopping season by delaying its HomePod until 2018, but that decision could pay dividends if it makes Siri a better assistant. The smart speaker was due to launch in the US, UK, and Australia in December 2017, having been announced back in June alongside the iMac Pro at WWDC. Today, it conceded it will "need a little more time" before HomePod is ready for public consumption.

Apple HomePod delayed

Apple HomePod delayed

Apple has delayed its HomePod smart speaker, pushing the launch of the Siri-powered Amazon Echo rival back into 2018. HomePod was revealed back in June 2017, a streaming speaker that physically embodied Siri, and which promised both smart home control and better music playback than other such products on the market.

New Apple HomePod could add iPhone X’s Face ID

New Apple HomePod could add iPhone X’s Face ID

Apple's HomePod smart speaker isn't even on Apple Store shelves yet, but whispers about the next-generation model are already getting us intrigued. The Siri-powered speaker was unveiled earlier this year, as Apple's alternative to Amazon's Echo and Google's Home. However, while this first-generation HomePod focuses predominantly on music, its successor could use the same technology that powers Face ID on the iPhone X to be far more useful.

Apple iPhone 8 event: the announcement schedule (or what we expect)

The Apple Event on October 12th will include the products shown in this article in the order they appear - or so we expect. Due to the inordinate amount of leaks surrounding Apple's upcoming products, not least of all the next-gen iPhone 8 (or whatever it'll be called), the following predictions can be made. I'm also ordering the product announcements below according to patterns Apple's exhibited with past releases at major events over the past decade.

5 iPhone 8 bombshells leaked in the past 2 days

Over the past couple of days the next iPhone's features have been tossed about like a spilled pack of cards, in spectacular fashion. It's not as if the iPhone 8 hasn't been leaked before - it's just that it hasn't been leaked by Apple itself. Lots of what you're about to see came from firmware code released by Apple for the HomePod - and what's included inside was rather telling.

More iPhone 8 HomePod hints: tap to wake, split status, no Touch ID

More iPhone 8 HomePod hints: tap to wake, split status, no Touch ID

Since Apple was “kind enough” to itself provide a treasure trove of clues regarding the upcoming iPhones, developer Steve Troughton-Smith has lost no time in digging those hints out and dusting them off for public enjoyment. And while they say nothing about the actual design of the iPhone 8 itself aside from one art asset, they do help give users some idea of the features they can expect from the upcoming 10th anniversary edition.

iPhone 8 face unlock confirmation found in HomePod firmware

iPhone 8 face unlock confirmation found in HomePod firmware

Sometimes you find the biggest clues in the strangest of places. In this case, one of the iPhone 8’s most debated feature has been more or less confirmed in a device far removed from an iPhone: a smart speaker. That is exactly the little piece of treasure that developer Steve Troughton-Smith discovered when digging through the Apple HomePod’s firmware, which Apple itself accidentally leaked. But while it does seem to answer one question, it still leaves plenty of room for other questions.

Apple let me down: 3 things I wanted to see at WWDC 2017

Apple let me down: 3 things I wanted to see at WWDC 2017

At a jam-packed two and a half hours, Apple's WWDC 2017 keynote certainly wasn't slow going. iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra; the Siri-powered HomePod and new MacBook Pro and MacBook Configurations; the updated iMac and the sneak peek of the stealthily-seductive iMac Pro: this year's Apple developer conference bucked the trend and mixed new software and hardware. All well and good, but I went into WWDC day one with some back-of-the-envelope expectations, and those turned out to be dashed. Here are the three things I wanted to see Apple bring to the table, and why.

Apple’s HomePod sounds terrific – but the Siri Speaker has a big issue

Apple’s HomePod sounds terrific – but the Siri Speaker has a big issue

Surprise: the HomePod may be Apple's physical embodiment of Siri, but there Cupertino firm would really rather you think of the smart speaker as a music system first and foremost. Described as a blend of Sonos and Amazon Echo during the WWDC 2017 keynote, here Siri is really the gateway rather than the main event.

Siri Speaker up close: this is Apple HomePod

Siri Speaker up close: this is Apple HomePod

This morning Apple revealed the HomePod, their first "home speaker" - or Siri Speaker, if you prefer. This device has the same processor as the most modern iPhone, no display, and a much more powerful set of speakers than an iPhone. It needs to be plugged in to a physical wall socket and it's able to do a litany of tasks if you ask it - through Siri, of course. Today we're having a closer look at Apple official.

Apple HomePod speaker release date and details

The Apple Home Speaker is what Tim Cook suggested would be Apple's attempt to "reinvent home music." This device, says Apple, is in line with the legacy of the iPod, and reinventing personal mobile music. Phil Schiller stepped on stage and detailed the speaker top to bottom as a piece of equipment that had not existed before - "Why hasn't this happened yet?"
