The iTunes App Store may not be out of the fire when it comes to application submissions just because they are becoming a bit more transparent on the matter, but at least it's a step forward. While there were many apps that got caught in the crossfire of app submission, it was a Google Voice client that brought up some of the most dust. But, it looks like a new client, while unofficial, has just made its presence known within the App Store. It's called GV Connect, and it's available right now.

That Gmail voice-calls leak we talked about earlier today?  Google has officially announced it, confirming that US users should see it added to their Gmail chat list over the next few days.  Initially the service will be free for outgoing calls to US and Canadian numbers, though Google will also offer international rates from $0.02 per minute.

Google are apparently trialling a system whereby their Google Voice VoIP app is integrated with the web-based Google Chat IM service within the Gmail interface.  According to CNET's sources, the new VoIP system is built into the existing Chat UI and allows for ingoing and outgoing calls without any locally running software.

A version of Google Voice Desktop has leaked, the softphone client for their Google Voice service that's based on the Gizmo5 technology acquired back in November 2009.  TechCrunch had been pestering their sources for screenshots of the app and instead were sent the software itself; as you might expect, it basically allows you to make voice calls through your Google Voice number from your PC or Mac.

Google were reportedly testing the app in-house earlier in 2010, but last month leaks suggested that the company had put the software project on hold and potentially scrapped it altogether.  According to the sources, Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin were unhappy with the idea of software being developed that would run outside the browser.

It's been just over a year since Google Voice launched. Back then, it was just a preview (or, Beta, if you prefer), in which you'd actually need to get an invite to participate in the service. You'd get one phone number that could ring all of your other devices, or just one device in particular, based on your preferences. You also got free voice calls, and text messages, to the US and Canada, low-priced international calling, and voicemail that "works like email." Basically, a bunch of goodies. And now, today, Google has officially pulled the "preview" off their Google Voice service, and opened it for everyone else.

If Google can't get Google Voice onto the iPhone via the App Store, then they're just going to go the long way instead and get in there via the browser.  The search giant has just announced a new, web-based version of Google Voice that allows users to access the VoIP service via their smartphone browser.  Coded with the magic of HTML5, the nippy app works with the iPhone and webOS devices like the Palm Pre, and supports calling, voicemail access and SMS.

Google Voice has been available in beta form for a while now and users can get access to the service by requesting an invite from Google or getting an invite from existing Google Voice users. The catch to the service was that the user had to use a new phone number for the features of GV to work. Google announced a new service for Google Voice that allows users to keep their existing number.

I think there are lots of us out there who have left a voice mail at one time or another and wished after we left it that we hadn't said something in the message. At least we can typically rest assured knowing that only the person we sent the message too would get it. If you use Google Voice, your voice mails may have been indexed and offered up in public search results.

We'll never argue with more apps showing up for the Palm Pre - after all, they just pave the way for a software download frenzy on the Palm Pixi when that arrives later in 2009 - so we're glad to hear of another two webOS titles fresh to the Palm Beta App Catalog.  First up is gDial Pro, an app which can be used to access and manage your Google Voice account; second comes iLike Concerts, a tool which looks out for your preferred artists and flags up nearby performances.

AT&T just released an official statement regarding the blocking of Google Voice from Apple's App Store, and it looks like they're taking absolutely no blame for the situation. This time around, AT&T is being very clear in their statement, coming from AT&T's Senior Executive Vice President, external and legislative affairs, Jim Cicconi. He states that AT&T had nothing to do with it simply and bluntly, but it looks like there's more to the story.
