Galaxy Z Fold Tab with tri-fold design could launch early next year

Galaxy Z Fold Tab with tri-fold design could launch early next year

Even with Huawei's, Motorola's, and now even Xiaomi's presence, it's hard to deny that, at least for the moment, Samsung has cornered the foldable phone market that it also created itself. It is close to launching third-generation models of its Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip phones but there are indicators that it isn't going to stop there. Aside from future rollable phones, the company has been known to be toying around with ideas for more foldable devices, one of which might even be arriving as early as next year's first quarter.

Galaxy Z Flip 2 might actually be called the Galaxy Z Flip 3

Galaxy Z Flip 2 might actually be called the Galaxy Z Flip 3

What's in a name, really, especially when it comes to smartphones. Although most follow a natural progression of numbers, some, like Chinese manufacturers, skip the number 4 due to superstition. There are also times when companies adjust their numbering, whether or not it makes sense, like what Samsung is reportedly doing this year. There will be no Galaxy Z Flip 2, sources say, and a Galaxy Z Flip 3 will launch with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in July instead.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 S Pen won’t have a dedicated slot

Samsung will be unveiling its most powerful Galaxy in two weeks but that won't be a smartphone as some might have hoped. Samsung's most powerful Galaxy phone, however, might come earlier in July but it's already proving to be a mixed bag. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 will, of course, be interesting because of its expected support for the S Pen but it might not have a silo similar to the Galaxy Note it will replace this year.

TCL Fold ‘n’ Roll concept mixes folding, rolling OLED with good reason

TCL plans to launch a commercial flexible smartphone this year, but until then it's unveiled an even more unusual concept, with the TCL Fold 'n' Roll combining both folding and rolling mechanisms. Tapping the company's own CSOT flexible OLED panel business and its homegrown hinge design, the Fold 'n' Roll does basically just what the name suggests: morphs from a regular smartphone form-factor to a 10-inch tablet.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 might be launching early with a smaller battery

Despite global economic and mobile market conditions, the Galaxy S21 series seems to be doing quite well. This might have emboldened Samsung to push through with its plans for the rest of the year, no matter how disruptive they may be to its usual rhythm. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is up next and, judging by leaks, it might be everything that some may have hoped it would be. Considering it would be taking the place of the Galaxy Note this year, however, there might not be much of a choice anyway.

OPPO and Vivo foldable phones might finally debut this year

OPPO and Vivo foldable phones might finally debut this year

Although it was really inevitable, the foldable phone train was, at least for a while, delayed by last year's more pressing global events. Things seem to be moving forward now, though, with Huawei finally launching its true second-gen foldable and Xiaomi finally jumping on board with the Mi Mix Fold last month. Those, however, aren't the only phone makers with foldable ambitions, and, according to some sources, OPPO and Vivo will also be joining the fray sooner rather than later.

TCL is working on a foldable, rollable phone hybrid, which combines two of the biggest trends in smartphone design at the moment. Xiaomi MIX foldable phone leaked in real-world photos

Chinese smartphone makers like Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo have traditionally been quite adventurous when it came to unconventional and new features but they all seem to take a "wait and see" approach when it comes to foldables and rollables. These companies have at one point or another showed off their concepts and prototypes for these new form factors but none have followed Samsung, Huawei, and Royole in actually launching foldable phones. Xiaomi, however, might still be planning to change that and its foldable phone prototype was just spotted in the wild yet again.
