GoPro cutting lineup to 3 models in effort to boost revenue

Following the disclosure of severe revenue losses during their latest quarterly results report, action camera maker GoPro has made the drastic decision to reduce its model lineup by nearly half in order to reduce costs. Starting in April, GoPro will continue offering just three cameras: the Hero 4 Black, the Hero 4 Silver, and the Hero 4 Session. Any remaining models are being discontinued.

The move is a serious one by GoPro, but then again the company is in a situation where its future is at great risk. Despite being one of the most popular and well-known action camera makers, GoPro says it earned $436.6 million in revenue last quarter, resulting in $34.4 million in losses, as well as being a 31% decline from last year.

The three GoPro models that will remain after April will keep their current pricing, with the Hero 4 Black at $500, Hero 4 Silver at $400, and the Hero 4 Session at $200. On the chopping block include the Hero+ LCD, the Hero+, and the standard entry-level Hero. The three soon-to-be-discontinued models are still available, including from GoPro's own website, so any users considering a purchase should choose quickly.

While GoPro's announcement focused on its poor finances and slimmed lineup, the company did confirm a few new things for the future, including the launch of a new Hero 5 flagship later in 2016, as well as the upcoming Karma drone.
