Galaxy Watch 4 Classic leak points to a familiar design

It seems that Samsung is really ready to go all out on its next generation of wearables powered, not by its own Tizen OS, but Wear OS by Google. In addition to making a big splash about the new user experience that will arrive with the merger of One UI and Wear OS, we have also heard about at least two smartwatch models that will be available in various sizes or configurations. One of those will apparently be called the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, and, based on these leaked renders, it will be giving that name its due.

Galaxy Watch 3 won’t be getting Wear OS

Galaxy Watch 3 won’t be getting Wear OS

Samsung just made its big wearable spiel earlier, exciting Wear OS users of what's coming next. The next Galaxy Watch will be the first wearable to run Google's new wearable platform, one that will look more like One UI rather than the Wear OS some have become familiar with. Unfortunately for Galaxy Watch fans, the news isn't exactly all good, and while Samsung promises it won't abandon owners of its Tizen-based smartwatches, it is practically leaving them behind anyway.

Samsung Google smartwatch OS at MWC 2021: One UI on top

Samsung Google smartwatch OS at MWC 2021: One UI on top

There's a new Samsung Galaxy Watch device coming from Samsung here in 2021, a device that'll be the first to run software developed jointly by Google and Samsung. It'll run its own Samsung-specific iteration of that software: A user experience called One UI Watch. As a Samsung representative said today, "One UI Watch will be available for Galaxy Watch on the new, unified platform [Samsung] jointly built with Google."

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 4 leaks, ready for 2021

A few images were shared this week that show a device called Galaxy Watch Active 4. If the rumored device ends up being made, revealed, and released by Samsung, it'll likely be the first of the smartwatches released after the public announcement of Google and Samsung's teaming up for smartwatch / wearables software. This device will likely look very similar to the images we're seeing here - maybe a few tones brighter or darker, but similar.

Wear OS 3.0 upgrade hopes dashed yet again by uncertainty

Wear OS 3.0 upgrade hopes dashed yet again by uncertainty

Google has taken users of its smartwatch platform on an adventure these past few weeks. It dangled the promise of what could be the biggest update to Wear OS yet but then opted to remain mum on any update plans until later this year. Smartwatch makers didn't help matters by being just as ambiguous about updating existing smartwatches to what is now unofficially dubbed Wear OS 3.0. Qualcomm has tried to remove doubts about the capability of its Snapdragon Wear chipsets to run this upgraded experience. Still, Google itself may have doused some cold water on that again by implying it might not be the case.

Wear OS 3.0 can run on Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100

Wear OS 3.0 can run on Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100

Excitement over the next major iteration of Wear OS was tempered by the most important question of all, "will it run on my smartwatch?" Unfortunately, Google's official statement is to wait for its official statement, and manufacturers other than Fossil have been ambiguous about their commitment to current Wear OS smartwatches in the market. That has, in turn, raised questions about the upcoming Wear OS's hardware requirements, which Qualcomm is now settling by saying that even its nearly three-year-old Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform is capable of running Wear OS 3.0.

Mobvoi TicWatch E3 hands-on reveals next Snapdragon Wear 4100 smartwatch

Mobvoi TicWatch E3 hands-on reveals next Snapdragon Wear 4100 smartwatch

Wear OS smartwatches are a dime a dozen but, unfortunately, most of them are running on rather old hardware. Majority of those, including ones launched just last year, are still using Qualcomm's Snapdragon Wear 3100 chipset that debuted way back in 2018. The chipmaker does have one updated wearable platform but so far only Mobvoi has been using it in the TicWatch Pro 3. Now it seems that it will have a companion and Mobvoi is once again taking the lead with the TicWatch E3.

Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 major Wear OS upgrade might happen

Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 major Wear OS upgrade might happen

The excitement over the upcoming version of Wear OS, a collaborative effort between Google, Fitbit, and Samsung, was partially dampened by the uncertainty of which smartwatches will actually receive the update. Unlike with smartphones, updates for smartwatches resemble the early days of Android where OEMs dictate which models get updates and which stay put. It seems that very few smartwatch makers are willing to commit to pushing the update for existing smartwatches, at least except for Mobvoi who might update its latest TicWatch Pro 3 later this year when the Wear OS update does come out.

Galaxy Watch 4 charger might not be included in the box

Although Samsung's smartwatches have always been popular in their own right, the Galaxy Watch 4 has become even more anticipated since Google I/O 2021 last month. It was there that the collaboration between the two companies was officially announced which would lead to the two's wearable platforms eventually becoming one. That the Galaxy Watch 4 will run Wear OS could already be enough reason to get excited but some bits of news might leave some a bit disappointed in what Samsung might be cutting out in return.

Fossil’s existing smartwatches won’t get new Wear OS

Given how it has seemingly stagnated over the years, it is understandable that there was a great deal of excitement over the new version of Wear OS coming later this year. That said, the announcement still left a lot of questions open, particularly about which smartwatches will get the update. Laying those questions to rest, Fossil gives its own answer but it isn't one that its customers might want to hear.

OPPO Watch 2 with Snapdragon Wear 4100 rumored to be coming soon

OPPO Watch 2 with Snapdragon Wear 4100 rumored to be coming soon

Wear OS by Google got a fair bit of positive media coverage a few weeks ago thanks to Google's announcements at its I/O 2021 developer's conference. But while the software is getting a massive upgrade, at least later this year or maybe even next year, it remains the case that all but one Wear OS smartwatch are running older Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear processors. Smartwatches to be launched later this year might finally change that and the OPPO Watch 2 could be leading the fray.

Apple Watch leads the smartwatch market but Wear OS still has hope

Apple Watch leads the smartwatch market but Wear OS still has hope

Given the increased attention to personal fitness and health in the past months since the pandemic hit last year, it's really no surprise that smartwatch sales have considerably risen during that period. Given its focus on health and fitness as well as its track record in saving lives, it is also no surprise that the Apple Watch continues to lead that market all the way to the first quarter of 2021. It isn't too late for Google's Wear OS, however, and it might finally catch a break in the coming quarters, presuming its partnership with Samsung bears good fruit.
