Android Oreo is coming on OnePlus 3, 3T, beta out now

Android Oreo is coming on OnePlus 3, 3T, beta out now

Once the darling and the underdog of Android OEMs, OnePlus has become the company that everyone either loves or loves to hate (perhaps soon to be eclipsed by Essential). OnePlus just seems to love stirring up the hornet’s nest, perhaps sometimes intentionally. One of its latest missteps was the end to OnePlus 2 updates, despite earlier promises, inducing fears of a repeat with the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T. Owners need not worry, at least not yet, as OnePlus seems to be on track to deliver its promise of Android 8.0 Oreo for the two devices, with a public beta now available for download.

OnePlus will begin limiting data collection, offer opt-out following privacy outcry

Earlier this month it was revealed that Android handset-maker OnePlus was collecting large amounts of users' data, both without explicit permission and without making it clear it was doing so. While the data is said to be used for analytical purposes, it included plenty of personally identifiable information. Understandably, OnePlus users have been more than a little upset about this, but the company has now come forward to address concerns and reveal changes to their collection policy.

OnePlus OxygenOS phone data tracking raises privacy concerns

Some OnePlus users are again raising privacy concerns over OxygenOS's telemetry tracking, namely that some of the data being gathered makes it possible to connect the user with the data. Discussions about this tracking were first raised in summer 2016, but caught public attention in a bigger way recently when security researcher Christopher Moore published a detailed breakdown of the data collection on his website.

OnePlus 5T with 18:9 display tipped for fall launch

OnePlus 5T with 18:9 display tipped for fall launch

It seems that OnePlus hasn't yet learned its lesson the hard way last year. There's was an uproar when it launched the OnePlus 3T merely five months after the OnePlus 3. Given that the two had very little difference other than the processor, it was understandable that OnePlus 3 owners felt a tad cheated. Now word on the street is that there is a OnePlus 5T coming no later than next month. But this time there might be one key difference: it might have an almost bezel-less 18:9 display.

OnePlus splits apps from OxygenOS for faster updates

OnePlus splits apps from OxygenOS for faster updates

With very few exceptions, like Nexus or Pixel or Essential, almost all Android smartphones come with some pre-loaded apps made by the OEM itself. It’s bad enough that these are baked into the firmware, making them impossible to uninstall and can only be disabled. What’s worse is that they can also slow down the development and rollout of updates. Joining the also few OEMs bucking that trend, OnePlus is extracting some of its custom apps for faster updates, both for the apps as well as OxygenOS itself.

OnePlus 5 now costs less if you’re a student

OnePlus 5 now costs less if you’re a student

There is probably going to be some mixed feeling about this new promo from OnePlus. One the one hand, you are trying to make technology more affordable for students who typically don’t have enough resources to pay in full for some new gadget. On the other hand, you are tempting students with a device that could also become their academic undoing. Regardless, OnePlus is now offering a 10% discount on the OnePlus 5 or any other order or combination of orders, provided you can prove you are a student.

Moto Z2 Force said to also have Jelly Scrolling effect

Moto Z2 Force said to also have Jelly Scrolling effect

As expected from a OnePlus flagship, the OnePlus 5 was surrounded by complaints almost immediately after its release, though not enough to knock the latest flagship killer off the top of the list. One of the biggest complaints, and one that the company insists is “all natural”, is the jelly scrolling effect blamed on the upside down orientation of the OnePlus 5’s display. Fortunately for the OnePlus 5, it might not be alone. Or rather, it might have not been the first at all. XDA Daniel Marchena reports that the latest Moto Z2 Force also exhibits this behavior and that it, too, might not be unique in that regard.

OnePlus 5 Mint Gold could be its next color

OnePlus 5 Mint Gold could be its next color

Autumn is coming, because winter is still far away. Though that may not be the reasoning OnePlus has, it might be the color that it has chosen. Over at its Weibo account, the Chinese OEM has just posted yet another teaser for the new color of its OnePlus 5 flagship. And this time, it seems to be more direct, talking about the golden leaves of autumn. Amusingly, it seems to have thrown in a still green mint leaf for good measure.

OnePlus is setting up shop in Australia

OnePlus is setting up shop in Australia

OnePlus might act big, but, in truth, it’s a small fish swimming with whales and shark, a startup playing in giants’ court. Rather than be a mark against it, it actually speaks to the company’s ambition and capabilities that it is actually able to compete with the likes of Samsung, Huawei, and more as much as it does. That said, it’s official availability in markets is still very limited. Case in point: it is only this month that it will take the steps to officially setup a presence in the land down under.

OnePlus 5 3rd color teased – but be wary

Today OnePlus teased the next color for their OnePlus 5, a device that's had several newsworthy mishaps since launch. As it happens, SlashGear's OnePlus 5 Review suggested that the phone was downright decent - especially for the price.
