This Lexus is covered in over 40,000 programmable LEDs

Lexus is back with another of its radical concept design projects. Following the tires made of ice, life-size cardboard replica, and glowing, heartbeat-projecting paint comes a 2017 IS sedan covered in 41,999 programmable LEDs. Dubbed the "LIT IS," the car can change colors in seconds, or just constantly shift through the spectrum, turning it into a digital disco ball on wheels.

While cool as hell, it's probably for the best this is just a one-off project and not actually for sale. As you can imagine, there's no way drivers wouldn't be distracted by this ride. Not to mention the fact that the LED visualization can be set to respond to music and gestures.

The LIT IS was created in collaboration between Lexus and the music video service Vevo, and is featured in singer Dua Lipa's new video for "Be The One" (below). There's no post-production effects involved, as the car's 41,999 LED lights were applied by hand and make use of 5,280 feet of wire.

The interactive visualization features three settings: Attract mode has the lights set to a loop of different color patterns that highlight the Lexus' design and styling; Music Viz mode syncs to the music playing on the car's stereo, creating unique, responsive displays; and Gesture mode allows the motion of the LED animations to respond to hand movements from someone outside the car.
