Smartphone shipments top 1.5b in 2016 with Apple leading in Q4

It appears that 2016 was a pretty good year for the smartphone industry, at least according to new data from Strategy Analytics. The analytics firm announced that smartphone shipments managed to hit an impressive 1.49 billion last year. That's a new record for the industry, and it represents a 3% year-over-year rise in total smartphone shipments from 2015.

That might definitely sound like flame/link bait, but that is undoubtedly the first thing that will come to mind when you see Vivo's latest flagship, front and back. You'll probably forget for a while that it does have the boasted 6 GB of RAM, at least in one configuration. Like something almost too good to be true, the Vivo Xplay5 mixes almost everything you'd want in a high end smartphone this year, though curiously misses out on a two or three features. Sadly, even if you were willing to accept those flaws, it's not something easily accessible to everyone everywhere.

Chinese smartphone OEMs seem to be beset, warranted or not, by two stereotypes. One is that they are quite talented at "mirroring" the latest design trends. The second is that they can get pretty crazy when it comes to features. Just like this latest leak coming out of the country regarding Vivo's upcoming Xplay 5 smartphone. If one of the rumored details about it is true, then it could very well be the world's first smartphone with 6 GB of RAM, possibly even beating Samsung's Galaxy Note 6.

Vivo X6 and Plus released, both join the HTC/iPhone lookalike club

This week the folks at Vivo have decided to reveal a set of device by the name of Vivo X6 and Vivo X6 Plus. These devices should look fairly familiar to you. They have a set of details that will remind you instantly of either an HTC One or an iPhone, depending on what you're more familiar with. They might even remind you of a Samsung Galaxy S6. They've all joined a family of machines that come from a single design philosophy - one where the front of the phone is white or black and covered with glass while the back is metal or glass and has two two antenna bands.
