Apple TV jailbreak gets video demo: Apps ahoy!

We've been keeping a close eye on the Apple TV jailbreak situation, and with one reportedly functioning exploit based on SHAtter already tipped to be working on the set-top box, it was only a matter of time until it fell to the hacker's attempts.  The iPhone Dev Team wrapped SHAtter up in a custom build of their PwnageTool - apparently not quite ready for public release, sadly - and managed to convince the Apple TV to load a pre-jailbroken IPSW.

New Apple TV jailbreak already in works using SHAtter

The SHAtter iPhone jailbreak we wrote about yesterday looks like it could be even more useful than previously thought.  As well as opening up the potential for jailbreaking/carrier-unlocking the iPhone and iPod touch while still allowing users to upgrade with official Apple firmware, new testing on the firmware for the new Apple TV has revealed that it, too, is susceptible to the same SHAtter jailbreak hack.

Say "shattered" and "iPod touch" in the same sentence, and we'd usually think you'd been careless with your new PMP.  Unfortunately for Apple's repairs department, however, SHAtter is actually a new exploit that should eventually replace now closed loophole used by the jailbreakme.com site.

Amazon’s Kindle Gets Jailbroken, Additional Font Options Now Available

It was only a matter of time. The new Kindle has been jailbroken, and now you can take advantage of the options that come along with it. Of course, if you're not a fan of handling a device that's not necessarily "up to code" from the original manufacturer, you could always sit back and just enjoy official updates. But, if you do like to get your hands a little dirty, then you'll be happy to know that all of the previous jailbroken-specific hacks that were available for the previous generation Kindle are now available for the newer version.

Apple TV iOS roots confirmed: jailbreak hacks ahoy!

Apple's mysterious mention of an "iProd2,1" in the iOS 4.2 beta spotted earlier this year has turned out to be the newest Apple TV, prompting speculation that the set-top box might be a potential jailbreak target for enterprising hackers.  Contrary to earlier rumors, Apple made little reference to the second-gen Apple TV's underlying OS at its launch earlier this month; it had initially been expected that they would push iOS heavily and even bring the App Store to the STB.

Apple's HDR photography tool for iOS 4.1 on the iPhone 4 will soon be available for iPhone 3GS and 3G owners, albeit only those who have jailbroken their handsets.  Jailbreak expert Will Strafach is responsible for the hack, which will apparently be included as part of the Cydia unofficial download store available for jailbroken devices.

iOS 4.1 Jailbreak exploit identified already

Apple's iOS 4.1 update was only released yesterday, but already a potential jailbreaking hack has been identified.  More interestingly, according to the iPhone Dev Team, the boot ROM based hack would require a significant change in hardware should Apple attempt to close the loophole; the flaw has been identified not only in the iPhone 4 but the iPad and fourth-gen iPod touch too.

Sony block PS3 PSJailbreak hack with firmware v3.42

Sony has pushed out a firmware update for the PS3, v3.42, which the company claims "includes additional security features".  However, according to gamers who have installed the update, the specific features involve blocking the PSJailbreak family of hacks which some owners have been using to circumnavigate the PS3's copy-protection and install titles direct to the console's hard-drive.

Aussie judge makes ban on PSJailbreak USB dongle permanent

Last month I mentioned that a new USB dongle called PS Jailbreak had surfaced that promised to jailbreak your PS3 without having it open the chassis or void your warranty. The flash drive plugged into the USB port on the PS3 and hacked the console to allow you to play games off the hard drive directly.

Apple iOS auto-lock iOS patent application could monitor iPhone jailbreak/unlocking

Apple iOS auto-lock iOS patent application could monitor iPhone jailbreak/unlocking

A new Apple patent application could see future devices from the company automatically lock themselves, alert their owners or even Apple should they be either used by an unauthorized person or modified in a non-permited way.  Spotted by ArsTechnica, while the patent abstract describes a security-minded application - unauthorized use of the device, such as an iPhone, resulting in its rightful owner being notified via email, voicemail or other service - the full text also suggests that hacking, jailbreaking, unlocking, swapping SIMs or moving the device away from a preset area could also trigger either lock-downs or selective feature blocks.  In addition to full or partial blocks of this sort, the device could also take a photo of the person using the handset.

Apple fix for iOS PDF exploit in pipeline

Apple fix for iOS PDF exploit in pipeline

Apple has reportedly come up with a fix for the remote PDF exploit that led the German government to issue an official warning about iPhone security.  The exploit is the loophole used for the Safari-based jailbreak launched at the weekend; as well as allowing Apple devices to be hacked for unofficial third-party applications (and the first step in the path for unlocking locked handsets), it also leaves the door open for malicious attacks which could potentially get root privileges on the device.

McAfee Labs worries about flaws remote jailbreak for iPhone exploits

There were lots of iPhone users out there that did a little dance of joy when jailbreaking was tossed into the DMCA as fair use. This is a good thing for users who want the freedom to do with their handsets as they wish.
