Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini breaks cover alongside big brother

Samsung's Galaxy S5 Mini, the inevitable compact version of the flagship Galaxy S5, has starred in an unofficial photoshoot with its bigger brother, confirming that the 4.5-inch handset won't actually be that much smaller. Samsung is yet to officially announce the Galaxy S5 Mini, though the specifications are now well known: a 720p Super AMOLED display, fingerprint heart-rate scanner, and a new Exynos 3 Quad processor of the Korean company's own creation.

That chip runs at 1.4GHz and has quadcore Mali-400 MP4 graphics, new benchmarks supplied along with the photos to SamMobile confirm. There's also 1.5GB of memory and 16GB of storage, plus a memory card slot.

Unsurprisingly, the 16-megapixel camera of the Galaxy S5 hasn't made it over, with the Mini model getting an 8-megapixel main camera and 2.1-megapixels up front. Video recording is limited to 1080p Full HD, not 4K.

According to the tipster behind the pictures, the Galaxy S5 Mini is water and dust resistant, certified to IP67 just like the bigger model. That's despite having an open microUSB port; on the GS5, there's a fiddly little cover that needs to be slotted over the connection.

What it's not is massively smaller. As with the HTC One mini 2, the size difference between the two devices is minimal: this is more about fleshing out Samsung's mid-range and cashing in on the popularity of the Galaxy S5 brand name, after all.

No word on when Samsung might give the phone its official reveal. The company is holding a launch event tomorrow, though that's expected to see the new Galaxy Tab S take center-stage.
