Although there's no consensus regarding who initially developed and implemented the idea of an exhaust system that uses springs to connect essential components, Yamaha is at least one company to embrace this solution back in the 1960s. However, adding springs wasn't necessarily an immediate fix. Even when they prevented the exhaust pipes from breaking, the springs themselves could still break. Designers addressed this by adding a rubber hose over the springs for a dampening effect, as well as redesigning the springs in three sections so different components could handle different tasks.
