The Mewtwo Pokemon GO countdown begins now!

Pokemon GO summer hype had another kick in the pants today as our countdown to Mewtwo hit start. A source familiar with the information (who wished to remain anonymous) informed SlashGear today that Niantic's target for "the arrival of Mewtwo" might be sooner than we first expected. As the extended stay of the Legendary Bird Pokemon ends, the time will be most ripe.

Previous projections tipped by this same source seem to have been fairly accurate. With the last tip, Mewtwo was mistaken for Ho-Oh – but otherwise the prediction was spot on. Like a prophesy, but accidentally seeing Stannis Baratheon as the Lord of Light's Chosen One instead of Jon Snow – whoopsie!

Artwork Above comes from illustrator Lord Phillock on DeviantArt. This image uses the proportions of MewTwo from the film "MewTwo Returns" – and therefore basically matches the MewTwo we're seeing in Pokemon GO – spot on! Check out Lord P's other works for more Pokemon, too!

As of now, Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, and Lugia have had their stays extended until the 31st of August, 2017. While The Pokemon Company's announcement (made on Pokemon dot com) suggests they'll be here "one more week", the 31st is in fact the target date. When I say "target date", I mean that, in classic Niantic fashion, this seems to be the plan for now – and things could change if anything unexpected happens.

Mewtwo's release is targeted for the last day of availability for the Legendary Bird Raid Bosses. The month of September will be – therefore – Mewtwo month. If all goes as planned, this will be the first in a line of Exclusive Raid Battles that'll bring players together at unique locations in major cities around the world.

We asked Niantic about this line: "Mewtwo will be the first of the Exclusive Raid Bosses, but other powerful Pokémon may also begin to appear in raids in the weeks following the launch of the Exclusive Raid Battles." And received the following statement: "We'll be revealing more information soon, stay tuned!"
