Android 12 Beta 5 and final before Pixel 6 release date

Android 12 Beta 5 and final before Pixel 6 release date

The final Beta release before the full public release of Android 12 is upon us. If all goes according to expected plan, the final release candidate version of Android 12 will appear on the 8th or the 15th of September. After that, we'll likely see a Google Pixel 6 event with Android 12 in full effect on October 12 or 19.

Pixel 5a overheating and touchscreen bugs are already on Google’s plate

Pixel 5a overheating and touchscreen bugs are already on Google’s plate

In just a few weeks, Google is expected to finally launch what could be its most exciting Pixel phone yet. Before that happens, however, it is pretty much pushing its 2020 5G phones off the stage, leaving the Pixel 5a (5G) as the sole remnant of that past (the non-5G Pixel 4a is still around, curiously). That is well and good for those that aren't interested in the Pixel 6, but unfortunately, the mid-range 5G Pixel phone is apparently experiencing several problems that can hopefully be fixed with software updates.

Google Pixel 5a Jony Ive Apple parody video is strangely out of time

The video you're likely about to watch was produced by Google to make you giggle. It was made to promote the Google Pixel 5a, sure, but less because it's a great phone and more because you love to watch ads during the Super Bowl. You might even forget what the video is about by the time you get to the end of it.

Pixel 5a teardown is surprisingly tedious

Pixel 5a teardown is surprisingly tedious

High-end phones are often built with more expensive materials and designs that are, more often than not, difficult to open up for repairs. In contrast, mid-range phones are traditionally easier to disassemble, though that trend is changing now as well. The new Pixel 5a seems to be part of that changing trend, and while it was easy to get started, Google's unconventional design and assembly require too much work to replace even some of the most basic components.

Pixel 6 screenshot leak shows off under-display fingerprint reader

Many of us are awaiting the official reveal of the Pixel 6 line, but as we wait for that official confirmation to come down the pipeline, it seems that Google itself is leaking some details about the new phones. Hiroshi Lockheimer, who serves as VP of Android at Google, shared a screenshot taken from what appears to be one of the phones in the Pixel 6 lineup, and though the screenshot is fairly innocuous at first blush, there's actually a lot it can tell us about the phone upon closer inspection.

Pixel 5 and 4a 5G discontinued, paving the way for Pixel 6 launch

Pixel 5 and 4a 5G discontinued, paving the way for Pixel 6 launch

Google just launched the Pixel 5a (5G) barely a week ago, but its parents have already been given the pink slip. A more affordable version of the Pixel 4a 5G that shares some features with the Pixel 5, the Pixel 5a 5G is being positioned as the budget option for Android purists and loyal Google fans. Of course, it isn't the only Pixel phone to be offered this year, and Google is now clearing out stocks of the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G to make room for what could be the most notable Pixel phones since the 2016 original.

Pixel 5a (5G) reportedly overheats when recording at 4K 60fps

Pixel 5a (5G) reportedly overheats when recording at 4K 60fps

Since 2013, Google has made 14 smartphones, the latest being the Pixel 5a which was announced just this week. Despite eight years of experience and multiple hardware partners, it seems that the tech giant still hasn't nailed quality down. There have been issues here and there across all Pixel generations, not all of which could be fixed by a software update. Just a few days old, some are already reporting problems with the Pixel 5a's camera, though the issue might have been present as far back as the Pixel 5 last year.

Pixel 6 charger will also be missing from the box

Pixel 6 charger will also be missing from the box

It was a rather controversial move for both users and some government regulators, but the trend of removing the charging brick from smartphone boxes might become standard soon. Apple started it, and Samsung followed suit after mocking it. Google will soon be next, apparently, as the company made it publicly known that the Pixel 6 won't ship with a charger either, for the exact same and sometimes questionable reasons its peers have been pushing since last year.

Pixel 5a with 5G gives Android a $449 heavy-hitter

Pixel 5a with 5G gives Android a $449 heavy-hitter

Google's Pixel 5a with 5G was hardly the best-kept secret, but that doesn't mean a $449 Android phone isn't worth getting excited about. Latest to join the Pixel line-up, the Pixel 5a pairs key Pixel 5 features with a much more affordable price, not to mention the promise of first-dibs on Android 12 when it's ready later in the year.

Google Pixel 5a Review

Google Pixel 5a Review

Google's a-series phones have always been the pick of the Pixel range, and the new Pixel 5a with 5G is no different. Straying little from the recipe of minimalistic hardware and design, balanced performance, and a knock-out camera, this latest addition to the affordable end of the spectrum may not use Google's homegrown Tensor chip as the upcoming Pixel 6 promises, but it also costs just $449.

Pixel 5a Google Fi sighting confirms name and price

Pixel 5a Google Fi sighting confirms name and price

While many have their eyes set on the more premium Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, Google will be getting its mid-range offering out of the way first. Considering how much it might have in common with the Pixel 5, however, it might not even be accurate to label the Pixel 5a as a mid-tier phone. Regardless of specs, however, it will be the price that will determine where it slots in, and, based on an early sighting on Google's Fi MVNO network, it definitely fits the bill.

Pixel Fold reference in Android 12 code hints at Pixel 6 connection

Samsung's recently concluded event once again brought foldable devices into the limelight. Now more affordable and a little bit more durable, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 are being positioned to help take foldable phones to the mainstream market. Of course, that would require that other manufacturers also jump on the train, and, surprisingly, Google might be one of those. In fact, that rumored Pixel Fold could come sooner than expected, at least based on some loose connection with the upcoming Pixel 6.
