Sony PS4 tops 30M sold worldwide

Looks like Sony has its own reasons to be thankful for the PlayStation 4 this holiday week, about 30 million of them, in fact. The company has revealed that its latest video games console has passed 30.2 million units sold worldwide since it first launched in 2013. Sony notes that the sales figure was a total as of Sunday, November 22nd, exactly two years and seven days since the PS4 debuted in the US. It also means the number is likely spike up even more over the next few weeks, once the holiday shopping season kicks off this Friday.

"PS4 continues to demonstrate the fastest and strongest growth in PlayStation hardware history," Sony said in a press release. This statement is also evident in the fact that the console has 10 million units since March of this year alone, when the company last said the figure was over 20 million.

While Microsoft recently announced that its Xbox One was the best-selling console for the month of October, thanks in large part to the release of Halo 5: Guardians, it has been consistently outsold by the PS4 in North America nearly every month since 2013. It's likely because of this that Microsoft stopped revealing its hardware sales figures over a year ago, despite the Xbox One being far from considered a flop.

Sony's momentum with the PS4 is unlikely to slow anytime soon, as the console's price has been reduced in nearly all regions around the globe in the last few months. "We are sincerely grateful that gamers across the globe have continued to choose PS4 as the best place to play since launch two years ago," commented Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House.
