Samsung may acquire AMD

Though the idea that AMD would be acquired by any company is nothing less than a wild notion, word today is that one of the larger companies in just such a position may make such a move. Or make an attempt, anyway. Word from Korea today is that Samsung may have the clout – and the cash – to buy out AMD. Not to dismantle them, by any means, but to assimilate them into their own unit. What a monster that'd end up being.

To be clear again – the original source for this information makes this news amount to a rumor. The original source is Hankooki, a Korean publication which suggests that an acquisition of AMD by Samsung would be a "win-win for both companies."

They've used the example of a 2007 report from Samsung that suggested Ministry of Information and Communication Minister Chin said "it is necessary to consider an AMD acquisition in order to secure a new growth engine." That's from 2007 – a completely different smart device / mobile / processor landscape.

Here in 2015 no official comments have been made by either AMD or Samsung on the matter.

Over at Android Headlines, Justin Diaz puts this AMD acquisition rumor in perspective: Samsung acquiring AMD would put them on par with Intel and Qualcomm with semi-conductor tech. Imagine the processing production Samsung could accomplish with both AMD and their own process development in one shop.

Would Samsung enter the gaming PC business? Should they have been in the market already?

Or would a Samsung acquisition turn AMD into a non-gaming entity, focused instead on mobile devices?

We shall see! If this all turns out to be true, that is to say.
