Samsung's weirdest phone just leaked
The Samsung phone you're about to see is weird – and it's always been weird, each year it's been on the market. The phone is part of the W series, a largely high-priced and widely varied specifications-toting smartphone with multiple displays. If you've never heard of the Samsung W series before, you're not alone. Especially if you live in the USA, it's very likely you've never heard of this phone line before.
The Samsung W2019 was almost inevitable. Samsung releases a new "W" phone each year, and the 2019 model seems to fit the most basic version of a mold for the device lineup. We've covered this phone in the past – the line, anyway, and we've always seen a variety of responses from readers. We've seen responses aplenty, everything from "I can't believe Samsung still makes flip phones" to "I need one right now but they don't sell these in the USA."
The images you're seeing today come from the Samsung W2019, so named for its release year. It's another flip-phone, this time a smartphone flip-phone as it's been the last several years. This device has multiple touchscreens – none of which can bend or curve. This is sort of the testing ground for what the Galaxy X might be – at least PARTIALLY, for its two-tiered operating system user interface.
The Galaxy W2019 has a distinctive lack of jacks, here. There's one USB-C, yes, but that's about it. No more headphone jack for the masses. This might well mean that Samsung is ready to ditch the headphone jack for all its headline smartphones in the year 2019, which would be somewhat of a bummer.
A report last week suggested Samsung was testing at least one Galaxy S10 prototype without a headphone jack. This would be a real bummer of a decision, and in my opinion a big mistake. Samsung is big enough a company that they'll probably be able to refrain from adding a headphone jack and won't lose a significant amount of customers. That doesn't mean I have to like it.
The Samsung W2019 will likely be released exclusively in China in the first half of the year. It'll probably be released on several carriers and off-contract through Samsung. If you're able to get one here in the USA, more power to you – let us know how it works out!
The Galaxy S10 and/or Galaxy X may be revealed at Samsung's yearly press event right before Mobile World Congress 2019. That'd likely put the reveal date at February 24th, 2019, with a release date for the Galaxy S10 (and its three different editions) at one week later. The Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus as well as the lesser Galaxy S10 (whatever it'll be called) will likely have a release date of March 1st or March 8th, both of these Fridays. We shall see!
