One day into the PlayStation 4's (hopefully long and fruitful) life as Sony's next-gen gaming console, reports of faulty systems are starting to pour in. Mashable has tabulated a slew of negative reviews pertaining to the basic hardware. Namely, there is a pulsing blue light on some consoles, and some aren't even sending a signal to the TV.
The complaints indicate a pattern. Those two symptoms–the blue light and the lack of signal–are the only major ones being reported en masse. The reports are coming in via Amazon reviews as well as the Sony support forum. Yet now may not be the time to panic. Mashable shares an IGN-obtained statement from Sony:
A handful of people have reported issues with their PlayStation 4 systems. This is within our expectations for a new product introduction, and the vast majority of PS4 feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. We are closely monitoring for additional reports, but we think these are isolated incidents and are on track for a great launch.
There have been several problems reported, which leads us to believe there isn't a singular problem that could impact a broader percentage of systems. The number of affected systems represents less than .4% of shipped units to date, which is within our expectations for a new product introduction.
As of this moment, the Amazon reviews for the PS4 show 712 5-star reviews and 404 1-star reviews, with little in the middle. Most of the negative reviews seem to be due to the Blue Light Special consoles and lack of audio or video to the monitors. There are also isolated complaints involving crashes and firmware, but nothing else establishing a pattern.
Customers who pre-ordered PS4's and received faulty systems can of course return them for a replacement or refund, though of course this will be hard on the instant gratification nerve. As Sony said, the vast majority of systems are fine; these problems may likely just be the first inevitable hiccups in the life of the next-gen console's tenure.
