OnePlus 5 release details and pre-order live today

Today the OnePlus 5 was revealed by the company during a special event broadcast live across the internet. This device has a 5.5-inch display with 1080p resolution and AMOLED technology as well as a dual-camera image and video capture system at its back – but it's the price that's most interesting of all. This is the most expensive device ever offered by OnePlus for any smartphone they've ever released.

The OnePlus 5 has a camera system worked on and tweaked by Sony and OnePlus, bringing a custom IMX 398 sensor to bear. This system has a 20-megapixel camera and a 16-megapixel camera with F/2.6 and F/2.7 aperture. This camera system is easily the best the company has placed on a smartphone – and will likely compete with the best smartphone cameras in the world today.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 sits onboard this device with up to 2.45 GHz clock speed. This is the same processor that's live on several other top-tier smartphones on the market today. It'll probably be on the Google Pixel 2, too.

Two versions of the device will be available, one with 64GB internal storage, the other with 128GB internal storage. The OnePlus 5 will use 2.12-LANE storage technology. RAM size will depend on the version of the device purchased, 6GB or 8GB, with LPDDR4X tech.

The battery inside this device is Dash Charge compliant for quick charging. It's 3300 mAh and will likely last a full day or more at a time. There's a fingerprint sensor on this smartphone – made with ceramic and coming with a 0.2s unlocking speed. This device works with NFC as well as Bluetooth 5.0.

This device will be released with the ability to work globally, off-network, as it was with previous OnePlus devices. CAT12/3CA technology will be inside for potential connectivity to a whole mess of carriers. Pricing will be dependent on model.

The version with 6GB RAM and 64GB internal storage will cost $479 off-contract. The version with 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage will cost $539 off-contract. Both versions of the device will be released online through the OnePlus store soon – both 128gb Midnight Black & 64gb Slate Gray. Pre-order starts today at OnePlus online.
