OnePlus 5 3rd color teased - but be wary

Today OnePlus teased the next color for their OnePlus 5, a device that's had several newsworthy mishaps since launch. While the OnePlus 5 had been the subject of some negative press since its release earlier this year, most reviews remained largely positive. As it happens, SlashGear's OnePlus 5 Review suggested that the phone was downright decent – especially for the price.

OnePlus 5 was one of several devices that had a bit of a 911 call bug – which was quickly fixed, to OnePlus's credit. Slightly less defensible were the OnePlus 5 ads spamming OnePlus 3 and 3T users notifications. The OnePlus 5's stereo recording doesn't invert and a flipped display caused jelly scrolling for some users.

Aside from this list of less-than-good news bits, the OnePlus 5 remains a rare value in an otherwise split-figure market. Either you've got a low-end smartphone for a low-end price, or a high-end smartphone for a price that'll make you slap your mama. OnePlus 5 seeks to break that trend – as previous OnePlus devices have done.

But the price has been contentious. The pricing switched for this cycle, ramping up just a bit over the previous device – see more about this in our OnePlus 5 Review linked above. Then in comes a device like the Motorola Z2 Play that undercuts the OnePlus 5 with a price of $400 – while the OnePlus 5 is $479.

Then there's the new color. The new color (*cough* RED *cough*) has not yet been revealed, but we'll know what it is soon enough! It might be white, (*cough* RED *cough*), or maybe gold (*cough* RED *cough*), or maybe it'll be purple!

Two colors are currently available, one the Slate Gray version for $479 with 6GB RAM and 64GB internal storage. The other is available in an 8GB RAM / 128GB Storage edition for $539, and the color is called MIDNIGHT BLACK. The third color is incoming on August 7th.
