Microsoft's next big Surface event is on October 2nd

Microsoft will hold an event on October 2 in New York City, the company has announced today, where we're expecting to see updated Surface devices and more. Confirmed with the tagging "A moment of your time," the event will be sandwiched in-between Apple's 2018 iPhone unveiling a week prior, and Google's big Pixel 3 reveal the following week.

Microsoft is dropping no hints as to what might be on the agenda, though there are a few easy guesses. Most likely top of the list is a refresh to the current Surface notebook and tablet range. That's likely to see Intel's latest Core processors added to the options.

The Surface Studio, meanwhile, is also highly likely to get a revamp. Microsoft's all-in-one, with its huge multi-angle touchscreen, was announced two years ago. The company is likely to want to give it new CPU and GPU options at the very least, though it could also have more expansive hardware changes planned.

It's also likely to be an opportunity for Microsoft to discuss its upcoming Windows 10 feature pack. Dubbed the Windows 10 October 2018 Update, and previously known as "Redstone 5," it's expected to bring a number of new additions to the OS. That includes a cross-platform Cloud Clipboard.

Beyond that, Microsoft is likely to tease new features for the next big update, due in approximately six months time. That will in part be a response to the new features for macOS that Apple announced at WWDC 2018.

Some of the news we'd particularly like to see, however, is unlikely to feature. For example, though rumors of a dual-screen folding Microsoft device that would bridge the notebook, tablet, and smartphone worlds have long been circulating, this so-called "Project Andromeda" probably won't be included on October 2nd.

Microsoft's success story with hardware, particularly with the Surface 2-in-1s and laptops, has been unexpected but welcome over the past few years, and the company has shown little signs of slowing down that momentum. The event kicks off at 4pm ET – or 1pm PT – and we'll be looking forward to seeing exactly how everything pans out in New York City in just a few weeks time.
