LG V30: What we already know

The anticipated LG V30 won't be making its official debut until later on this month, but ahead of that comes a slew of information, some of it from LG itself, others from unnamed sources. It's easy to lose track of all the tipped features if you haven't been paying attention, and so here to help is this primer on everything who know — both officially and unofficially — about this smartphone.

Camera

As we first heard from sources late last month, the LG V30's camera will have an f/1.6 aperture, making it the first smartphone with this specification. That feature has been confirmed by the company itself, as has the use of an LG 'Crystal Clear Lens,' the combination of which promises to offer bright, clear images.

What's the big deal about an f/1.6 aperture? It's the largest to ever make its way into a smartphone (and it's not terribly common among other cameras, either), allowing more light to reach the sensor; the Crystal Clear Lens, meanwhile, is made of glass, promising sharper images than you'll get with a plastic lens. The image above from LG demonstrates this.

Display

Another confirmed feature for the LG V30 is the 6-inch curved OLED display, pitting it against Samsung's Galaxy S8 offerings. The screen will be LG's first OLED mobile offering with 'Full Vision' technology, and it'll be joined by a QHD+ 1440 x 2880 resolution.

Design

We haven't yet seen the LG V30 is any official capacity, but images purporting to show the handset have surfaced online, and from the images we see a phone that builds nicely upon the design introduced with the V20 model.

Most recent on this front is a video that surfaced earlier this week featuring what looks to be the V30 handset. Both front and rear shots of the phone were included; the back looks very similar to the V20, including dual cameras and a fingerprint sensor, though there are some minor tweaks to the layout. There was also the alleged prototype from earlier this week, and an illustration of the phone.

No secondary display

While the V20 model featured a small secondary display, multiple sources have surfaced over the past handful of weeks stating that LG dropped this feature in order to maximize room for its new OLED Full Vision mobile display. That's not a terribly big sacrifice considering what buyers will get in return, but still disappointing for those who are fond of the feature.

Wrap-up

The LG V30 will be officially unveiled the end of this month, and so there are only a couple weeks of waiting remaining. By now the combination of official features and leaks have painted a picture of a sleek device, one with a display that will give Samsung a proper challenge alongside a design not terribly dissimilar from the V20 model. The phone will likely be priced between $699 and $799 USD
