GarageBand 2.1 for iOS adds Live Loops and 3D Touch

Apple's mobile music-making app, GarageBand for iOS, is getting an upgrade, adding 3D Touch support and Beat Machine-style Live Loops. The headline feature for the new app, GarageBand 2.1, takes drum machines virtual with a grid of instruments that can be simply tapped on and off to trigger loops and samples.

That's something we've seen from various DJ hardware controllers before, not to mention dedicated Beat Machines from Roland and similar samplers from other manufacturers. What Apple brings to the table – aside from the fact that GarageBand is still a free download – is some sync smarts.

In fact, the app can not only automatically keep each sample synchronized in time, but in pitch, too.

A library of EDM, hip hop, dubstep, and rock samples and loops are included, and more can be created and loaded in.

Meanwhile, the new version also adds a Drummer feature with a set of virtual session drummers, preloaded with a variety of acoustic and EDM sounds. Bass players get more virtual amps.

Belying suggestions that GarageBand is for amateurs alone, there are new automation features, controls recording, and a revamped EQ system. If you've got an iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus, 3D Touch support allows for pressure-sensitivity in playing instruments.

GarageBand 2.1 for iOS is a free download from the App Store, and required iOS 9 or above.
