Galaxy S8 details leak: Samsung's secret weapon may be mAh

The release date for the Galaxy S8 is nearly hear and rumors are swirling around the final form of the device – especially its innards. Two different versions of the Samsung Galaxy S8 are likely to appear, these replacing the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge (the larger of the two). Inside these devices will be a 3,000mAh battery and a 3,500mAh battery, for the smaller and the larger device, respectively – so say sources said to be speaking with Samsung in Korea.

According to The Investor, a Korean publication quoting a traditional paper source News1, a "Samsung official" suggested that they were going to "deploy the battery capacity for the two S8 variants." These capacities and the idea that two Galaxy S8 models will appear falls right in line with a string of tips and rumors we've gathered over the past several weeks. The device batteries will have some changes in manufacturing VS what was done with the Galaxy Note 7, but the size of the larger unit will be the same – so this report suggests.

This latest bit of information slides comfortably into our ever-changing vision of what the Galaxy S8 family of devices will be. Below you'll see a set of specifications for the Galaxy S8 and what we assume will be called the Galaxy S8 Plus. Note that these specifications are NOT official, nor are they final. We'll know the full, confirmed specs once Samsung holds their event this Spring.

Generally a new smartphone is presented with either more battery capacity or an improved ability to make use of the same capacity battery. If would seem, this time around, that Samsung is keeping the battery size the same with further battery optimizations. It's also been tipped that they're making the Galaxy S8 thinner than the most recent model — that's not easy, keeping with the same battery size and all.

The standard-sized Galaxy S8 would – if this set of specs and report above are right – have the same size battery as the Samsung Galaxy S7. That's 3,000mAh, far larger than the 2550mAh delivered with the Samsung Galaxy S6. This extra capacity is fit in a slightly thicker device than the Galaxy S6. According to our most recent detail report, the Galaxy S8 will get thinner than the Galaxy S7, but still thicker than the Galaxy S6.

• Galaxy S6: 143.4 x 70.5 x 6.8 mm

• Galaxy S7: 142.4 x 69.6 x 7.9 mm

• Galaxy S8: 140.1 x 72.2 x 7.3 mm

Samsung Galaxy S8 (Plus)• Display: 6.2in Super AMOLED, 1440 x 2650 (2K) Gorilla Glass• Operating System: Android 7.1 Nougat• Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 / Samsung Exynos 10-nm• RAM: 4GB RAM• Camera: 16MP, f/1.7 optics, 4K video, dual-LED flash• Front-facing camera: 8MP wide-angle lens with f/1.7 optics• Battery: 3,500mAh• Internal Storage: 64GB, w/256GB microSD card slot• Other Features: Fingerprint scanner, Metal frame, Wireless charging, USB-C

The release date for both of these devices will almost certainly be the same. Previous reports suggest that a March 29th Samsung "Unpacked" event would be likely. After that, a mid-April release – somewhere around April 21st – was tipped as being the perfect time for Samsung's release of the Galaxy S8 to strike.
