Cadillac CT6 to offer new 3.6L V6, Hydra-Matic 8-speed transmission

The Cadillac CT6 will be offered with a couple of different V6 engine options, the auto maker has announced, as well as a Hydra-Matic 8-speed automatic transmission. A new 3.6L V6 engine will be offered in the newest CT6, as well as a 3.0L twin-turbocharged engine, the latter of which is said to be based on the same architecture as the 3.6L. The new automatic transmission, meanwhile, will be a paddle-shift offering that is based upon the 8-speed automatic introduced with the Corvette Stingray.

As far as the 8L45 transmission goes, it'll be offered alongside the 3.6L V6 engine. Those who want the higher-capacity version, the 8L90, will be able to get it alongside the 3.0L twin-turbocharged V6 offering. According to the maker's assistant chief engineer for the transmissions, Bill Goodrich, the 8L45 "complements" the model's "new threshold for efficient luxury."

Both engines bring with them a stop/start functionality, which shuts the engine down when the car is completely stopped, and automatically turns it back on (restarts the car) when the brake pedal is released. This gives drivers all the power of a V6 offering, but without the extra fuel consumption that typically comes with them. The new 8L45 transmission supports this stop/start feature.

Complementing that feature is GM's Active Fuel Management, which — if the car's load is light — will temporarily shut off a couple of the 3.6L engine's cylinders, something that likewise helps keep gas usage down. They reactive on their own, no manual involvement from the driver being necessary. We've detailed some other features the Cadillac CT6 is going to offer drivers, which you can check out here.
