Yet another distraction behind the wheel: AVIS launch in-car internet

Looks like you may have another option when you next turn up at the hire-car counter; AVIS have rolled out their promised Autonet mobile internet service, so aside from weighing up the pros and cons of aircon, accidental damage protection and that ever-so-tempting convertible option, you can choose whether to shell out $10.95 a day for WiFi web access.

Autonet uses a small cellular router that redistributes either 3G 1xRTT or 2.5G EVDO data connections over normal WiFi, plugging in either to the car's cigarette lighter or a standard mains supply.  That means you get internet access both on the move and when you stop off at the hotel.

The service is available now in San Francisco, and will be rolled out in San Jose, LA and Newark over the next few weeks.  Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Miami, New York, San Diego and Seattle are on the cards for the third quarter.
