Twin Peaks Returns: Showtime Revives Cult Classic In 2016

Twin Peaks is returning, with the cult TV show being reborn for 2016 as co-creators David Lynch and Mark Frost ink a deal with Showtime. Nine new episodes of the surreal show will be produced, it's reported, airing 25 years after the original was cut by ABC after just two seasons. However, with casting yet to be announced, it's unclear whether Kyle MacLachlan will reclaim his role as FBI Agent Dale Cooper, investigating murder in the oftentimes-bizarre (and thankfully fictional) town of Twin Peaks, Washington.

Agent Cooper eventually solved the initial murder mystery, of slain homecoming queen Laura Palmer, but the show continued until ABC dropped it amid dwindling ratings.

A movie – Twin Peaks: A Fire Walk With Me – doubled as both a prequel to the TV series and as a way of tying up loose ends after the cancellation.

Unlike other recent reboots of classic TV shows, however, the new Twin Peaks episodes will be a continuation, rather than a reinvention, of the original series.

Although always requiring a certain type of viewer to appreciate the oddball humor and often bizarre plots and characters – such as the Log Lady – the show's availability on Netflix and a recent physical media release has kept the home-fires burning.

Where Lynch and Frost will take the plot remains to be seen, and Showtime is yet to confirm any specifics. According to Variety's sources, though, the new episodes will take into account the passage of time between 2016 and the original series, and Lynch will be directing them.
