Time Warner Cable outage ending after hours of downtime

Time Warner Cable has begun bringing internet services back online, after sweeping outages robbed subscribers across the US of their broadband service for several hours. The downtime affected TWC customers in 29 states, and is being blamed on a significant infrastructure issue encountered earlier this morning.

"[An] issue with our Internet backbone created disruption with our Internet and On Demand services," TWC public relations vice-president Bobby Amirshahi told USA Today of the outage.

The company has 11.4m subscribers across the US, many of whom took to Twitter to ask when their internet access might be restored. TWC would only say that it was investigating technical issues, however.

Problems began at around 4:30am ET, Time Warner Cable says, with services beginning to be restored from around 6am.

The exact cause of the problem was not detailed, and neither does the company have a specific timescale for when all subscribers should be back to normal service.
