This God of War documentary surprised me

God of War was unquestionably one of the best games released in 2018, if not the best. When fans heard that Sony was rebooting the God of War franchise years ago, many probably thought that it was just a cynical cash grab. When the game released in April of last year, though, it became clear that it was a game that was made with a lot of care and attention to detail. If you've ever wondered what goes into making a game on the scale of God of War, now's your chance to find out.

Sony published a new documentary called "Raising Kratos" today, and it gives players a look behind the scenes at the development of God of War. It starts right at the beginning too, with Sony Santa Monica splitting its workforce to work begin work on God of War alongside a new IP.

This isn't some situation where the word "documentary" is used loosely, either. Raising Kratos isn't some five-minute sizzle video that covers the high points of development and nothing else; the entire thing runs just a few minutes short of two hours, so it really takes a deep dive into not only the development process, but also how the developers went about recreating Kratos for the modern era.

I named God of War one of the best games of 2018, and noted that it's rare to see an established gaming franchise reinvent itself so successfully. Raising Kratos highlights that monumental task, along with all of the successes and failures the Sony Santa Monica team experienced during the game's five year development cycle.

If enjoyed playing through God of War last year and you've got a couple of hours to spare, Raising Kratos is definitely worth a watch. Sony has uploaded the full documentary to YouTube, so you can watch it in the video embedded above.
