The Nexus Android Lollipop upgrade: winners & losers

Nexus owners, get ready for an upgrade. Google has announced that most Nexus devices will soon be getting the upgrade to Android Lollipop, and while they didn't come right out and say which would and wouldn't get Lollipop officially, we've got a good idea. Via the Android Developer's page from Google, we see the factory image postings for all Nexus devices. The usual suspects you'd expect to get the update are there, but some notable exceptions are raising some eyebrows.

Here are the winners and losers of the Lollipop upgrade. Some, like the two new Nexus devices are obvious. Others, not so much:

In – Nexus 6, Nexus 9, Nexus Player, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 (2013, WiFi), Nexus 10, Nexus 7 (2012, WiFi)
Out – Nexus 7 (2013, Mobile), Nexus 4, Nexus Q, Galaxy Nexus (all), Nexus S (all)

Nobody expected the Nexus Q or Nexus S to get an update, but Google is also leaving behind more current devices like the 2013 Nexus 7 LTE. The Nexus 4 is also out of the mix, which could be due to Google's mysterious 18-month cycle for upgrades we heard about when the Galaxy Nexus was left out of the KitKat mix.

We'll note that this list could obviously change, and we'd at least hope Google would find a way to give those who purchased a Nexus 7 with a cellular antennae the Lollipop upgrade. If they don't, expect some furor from users.

Update: Looks like all Nexus 7 is getting the update and so does the Nexus 4.
