The 2019 Ford Series 1 Mustang RTR packs drift-worthy design

Ford's new 2019 Series 1 Mustang RTR isn't actually a drift car, but that doesn't stop it from looking like one, and when it comes to standing out in the automaker's best-selling coupe that's perhaps all that matters. The handiwork of Ford Performance and RTR Vehicles, the Series 1 Mustang RTR package combines special suspension with distinctive looks, along with a splash of rarity.

It's based on the Mustang EcoBoost or Mustang GT, and updates both the style and the performance. For the former, there's Ford Performance suspension with adjustable sway bars, tweaking the chassis balance for both passive and MagneRide suspension cars. That, Ford says, makes the new Mustang RTR ideal for both twisting mountain roads or doing some impromptu drifting on a track.

There's also the spoiler from the Performance Pack 1, here outfitted with an RTR Gurney flap. Staggered wheels are included too, with 19 x 9.5-inches on the front, and 19 x 10-inches on the rear.

At the front, there's the RTR grille with lighting, and the car gets a new aerodynamics package along with other bodywork. A special "RTR Powered by Ford Performance" badge is on the desk lid trim, and on the radiator cover. There are also unique RTR fender badges and puddle lamps.

Inside, the special badging continues. RTR floor mats and a serialized dash plaque are included in the package, together with illuminated "RTR Powered by Ford Performance" sill plates. There's a special shift knob, too.

"Our goal was to take the driving and owner experience of the iconic Ford Mustang to the next level," Vaughn Gittin Jr, President and Chief Fun-Haver of RTR Vehicles, said of the car. "This collaboration has created a Mustang that offers smile-inducing street driving, diverse capability on the track and a very distinctive owner experience for those looking to stand out from the crowd."

Importantly, you won't have to bolt on the new parts yourself. The Series 1 package is designed to be installed by a Ford dealer, onto any Mustang EcoBoost Performance Package 1 or Mustang GT Performance Package 1 donor car. That means you still get a factory warranty, too.

Pricing hasn't been confirmed yet, but the RTR Series 1 package will go on sale in early 2019, Ford says. Only 500 of the cars will be made in total.
