Take cover -- Apple Watch cases are coming

It was only a matter of time. You can't have a new Apple device without someone creating cases or the like for it. We saw this with the iPhone 6 — cases were being circulated before the phone even came out. Now we're getting the same treatment with the Apple Watch, and we must say, it's not pretty.

Well, it's pretty, I guess. A Blog to Watch, which is itself tongue-in-cheek (because it's about watches, of course) has shared an equally cheeky look at an Apple Watch case. the case slips over the top of the watch, and serves as a frame to your (possibly) next wearable.

I'd have to agree with Ariel Adams when he says "Stuff like this is rather easy to make fun of, but you know it is going to happen." This might be a fairly gaudy look at the future, but it is just that — a look into the Sapphire Glass crystal ball.

We're going to get Apple Watch peripherals, and they'll probably be a lot like this. We can't get away from bejeweled iPhone cases, so what makes the Apple Watch any different. The iPod nano saw a similar groundswell of peripherals when people started strapping them to the wrist.

The difference there is that iPods were falling victim to the iPhone, not a smartwatch, and being gently abandoned in favor of Apple's other iDevices. As a new platform with a dedicated staff, Apple Watch won't tumble down that same path, at least not for quite some time.

In the meantime — leading up to, during, and well after launch — we've got this type of thing to look forward to. On top of the $350 or so you're being asked to drop on an Apple Watch, case makers like these will ask another $50 or more to protect it from drops.

The pics you see above are mockups, and probably not coming from the designer who made them, but rest assured — they're coming. In droves. At mall kiosks, 7-11 counters, and vending machines at Chuck-E-Cheese.

Just prepare yourself now, because sometime in early 2015, the Apple Watch is coming. So are cases like this.
