Prince releases ONE SONG to Spotify

Prince releases ONE SONG to Spotify

This morning Prince released a singe by the name of "Stare" to Spotify exclusively. This is now the one song available from Prince on Spotify other than tracks on soundtracks and associated labels. After removing all of his singles and albums from Spotify and other streaming services earlier this month, Prince has returned with one song. The idea here, clearly, is that Prince doesn't need to have all of his music available all the time. Instead, he'll reveal one track at a time, pushing the hype machine in strange new directions.

Spotify takes on Apple Music with AI personalized mixtape

Spotify takes on Apple Music with AI personalized mixtape

Spotify is rising to the challenge of Apple Music's human-curated playlists, promising the sort of individualized mixtape that only a computer could deliver. Dubbed Discover Weekly, Spotify's new service looks at each user's listening history and then comes up with suggestions based on that, along with what related tracks other people are listening to and adding to their own playlists. That's then wrapped up into a new "mixtape" every week.

Spotify’s new map shows musical tastes of a thousand cities

Have you ever wondered what other people in your city are listening to? If so, Spotify's newly created Musical Map will be of particular interest. The map uses Spotify's glut of data to create playlists based on the listening habits of users across 1,000 cities around the globe. The map presently includes cities in the Americas, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and parts of Asia. Clicking on a city will pull up a link to a playlist on Spotify that was created to show what kind of music is popular in the region.

Spotify asks iOS users to switch subscription from App Store to web

Spotify asks iOS users to switch subscription from App Store to web

It's well known that Apple takes a 30% cut from all app purchases on the iOS App Store, and that fee is also applied to in-app subscriptions. So apps like, say, Spotify, the primary rival to the new Apple Music service, must hand over 30% of what each users pays when subscribing to the service directly on their iPhone. See where this is going? Spotify hopes you do, as they've begun encouraging users to switch their subscription over to the website in exchange for saving $3 per month.

Prince drops streaming music, towers over music industry with one track

Prince drops streaming music, towers over music industry with one track

Just as Apple Music arrives, so does Prince leave the streaming music universe. It's no coincidence that The Purple One has also released an ear-blasting new single track HARDROCKLOVER at the same time. This new track screams. It wails in protest. While it doesn't address the rise of the streaming music industry directly, it does push the envelope. It does remind us that Prince has the one true claim to being the greatest living rock star on the planet. He doesn't need to say so.

Deciding on Apple Music: what you need to know

Deciding on Apple Music: what you need to know

This morning we're having a peek at Apple Music in the wild for the first time. While we've gotten an opportunity to use the service earlier this year at Apple's developer conference WWDC, this is the first we're getting to use the service just like everybody else. Our first question is undoubtedly yours, as well: does it make sense for me to give up the streaming music service I already use to start subscribing to Apple Music instead? Deciding whether or not to use the music service built-in to your device as made by its creator is a decision most high-end smartphone users have to make at some point in their lives - why not now?

Spotify “Rewind” takes playlists back through time

Spotify “Rewind” takes playlists back through time

If you aren't old enough to experience the culture of music in the decades past, or if you're actually old enough and want to reminisce about it, then a new, unreleased, soft-launched Spotify might tickle your musical taste buds. Called simply "Rewind", the still unofficial featurette answers one of the most burning questions in the music industry today, one that may never really have any direct answer: If the artists in the 60s, 70s, and whatnot had Spotify, what would their Spotify playlists look like?

Spotify reveals it has 20m+ Premium subscribers

Spotify faces some big competition from newly unveiled Apple Music, but for now things are looking up: the service has revealed its latest subscriber numbers, and they show good things for the company. Millions of new subscribers are on board with Spotify, and that includes a substantial number of users subscribing to Spotify Premium, the ad-free for-pay service that gets rid of ads and certain other limitations like being restricted to shuffle play. The numbers come shortly after Spotify's successful funding round.

Spotify raises $526 million in funding to continue battling Apple

This puts the Swedish company at a valuation of $8.53, reported the Wall Street Journal, and means they have doubled their total funding to over $1 billion since launching in 2006. The new funding is said to allow Spotify to invest in new expansions and offering new forms of content, as they face a growing rival in the new Apple Music.

Spotify’s data shows more loyal ‘metal’ than ‘pop’ fans

Given the proliferation of pop music, one might feel it is the most popular music genre around — you can't be in a store, in the car, or just about anywhere else without hearing a pop song at least in passing. Spotify, though, has released some details that show all might not be as it seems - among the service’s own users, at least, metal is in fact the #1 most popular music genre with pop slipping in at a close-but-no-cigar #2 ranking.
