The Meta 2 augmented reality developer kit headsets have begun shipping, the company behind them has announced. Though they're shipping out to buyers a bit later than we'd originally heard, those who quickly pre-ordered should have their AR dev kit unit by the turn of the year. According to a recent statement by the company, more shipments will be heading out early in 2017, and customers will get a shipping notification in their inbox when their own order goes out.

This morning the team at Meta have revealed their first Developer Edition Augmented Reality headset, the Meta 2. This headset had been shown at places like a recent TED convention before - now it's time to bring the hardware and the software to the public via a developer unit. This unit will look different from the final consumer-aimed edition, and will work with holograms and digital content viewed through a transparent shield that sits on front of a headset worn by the user.

Immersive wearable headset manufacturer Meta has begun shipping Meta 1, its first batch of true augmented reality glasses. 1,500 pre-order customers, mainly looking to develop apps for Meta's unusual computing platform, will be getting units, each capable of creating a virtual office, theater, or gaming arena overlaid on top of their view of the real world.

Wearables start-up Meta has spilled its first demo of the latest Meta.01 developer edition augmented reality headset in action, promising shipping of the wearable computer from as early as the end of April. The wearable, which uses twin transparent displays to overlay digital graphics on top of the real-world, will come preloaded with a gesture-controlled sculpting and 3D printing app, which Meta has demonstrated in its new video: the wearer is able to indicate the shape of the required object in front of them with their fingers, and have that virtual shape automatically rendered for a 3D printer and made real.

Wearables startup Meta has revealed its latest headset, the MetaPro, a consumer version of its Meta 1 developer device that amps up Google Glass by overlaying full digital graphics over the real world. Expected to ship in June 2014, for the not-inconsiderable price of $3,000, the MetaPro glasses look far less geeky than their dev-focused predecessors but still manage to fit two 720p HD lenses with 40-degree field of vision. That, Meta says, is 15x the screen area that Glass delivers.

It's turning into a week of wearable computing, with Epson-partnered start-up Meta readying preorders for its true augmented reality headset. First revealed back in January, Meta offers a fully digitally-mediated view of the world - allowing for graphics, video, and text to be superimposed on real people and objects - rather than the Google Glass approach of floating a subdisplay in the corner of your eye. Sales for developers will kick off at 9am Pacific (noon Eastern) on Friday, May 17.

The augmented reality scene is hotting up, with the promise of full computer-mediated vision for the mainstream and another hint that Google won't have the Glass market all to itself thanks to an incoming headset from startup Meta. The wearable project actually goes one step further than Project Glass, putting a full twin-display digital environment - controlled by two hand 3D tracking - in front of the user, rather than floating notifications and prompts in the corner of their eye as Google's system does.
