Don’t underestimate the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus

Don’t underestimate the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus

Any other year, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus would feel, well, magical. Apple's two new smartphones address some long-standing complaints from iPhone owners, like including wireless charging support; they look sleek, have improved cameras, and borrow clever screen technology from the iPad Pro. Of course, this year there's a shadow looming over both new handsets.

The $2,000 iPhone is coming

The $2,000 iPhone is coming

Like many, I was unsurprised and generally unmoved by the iPhone X. We can blame leaks for that. The event wasn’t exciting, and judging by the opening which brought us words from Steve Jobs’ that had never been made public, it’s clear Apple wanted it to be. Instead, we got exactly what we expected, save for one small detail. Apple is framing the iPhone X as the blueprint for mobile tech moving forward. On a hardware level, that’s great. Elsewhere, that’s a problem.

IKEA welcomes iPhone 8 wireless charging with tribute campaign

You can credit the iPhone 8 and iPhone X for the recent resurgence in interest in wireless charging, and IKEA isn't letting that opportunity pass it by. The company has offered select versions of its furniture with wireless charging functionality since 2015, but until now iPhone owners have required an adapter in order to take advantage. With the arrival of native support in the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, as well as the upcoming iPhone X, IKEA is relaunching its range.

Netflix HDR support arrives for iPhone 8, iPad Pro, and iPhone X

Netflix has just expanded its HDR and Dolby Vision support, announcing that these videos are now available on the iPad Pro, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and the iPhone X. It was a quiet announcement, as with the other devices that get Netflix HDR support, but represents a big expansion to its still-small list of supported mobile devices.

iPhone X shipments might be delayed further, says analyst

iPhone X shipments might be delayed further, says analyst

The iPhone X has already been announced, so its existence and its features are no longer in question. What’s still in doubt, however, is when people will actually be able to get their hands on one. As already speculated before, the tenth anniversary iPhone won’t be shipping at the same time as its more conventional iPhone 8 siblings. But according to financial services company Raymond James, the iPhone X might actually come much, much later, around December in fact. Not enough time to wrap or enjoy your holiday gift.

iOS 11 features: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth toggles

iOS 11 features: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth toggles

In iOS 11 feature nitpicking today we're getting down to business with the newest set of toggles in the software's Control Center. Apple's documentation makes clear their intentions: allowing some parts of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to remain active while the user turns other parts off in their iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. There is a whitelist of devices and functionality that remains active unless Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are turned off deeper inside iOS 11's settings.

Tim Cook says $999 iPhone X is “a value price”: Is he wrong?

Tim Cook was put on the spot about iPhone X pricing, with Apple's CEO questioned as to whether the new flagship smartphone was too costly for the typical American user. It's the culmination of several months of iPhone pricing controversy, after wide speculation about just how much Apple could afford to charge for the iPhone X. The worst fears of many came true last week, with Apple confirming that the new handset would start at $999, but according to Cook we're thinking about it all wrong.

Belkin just fixed Apple’s big headphone jack problem

There's a dongle/adapter out there made by Belkin, a piece of equipment that's ready to engage with all the iPhones. This device is called the "3.5 mm Audio + Charge RockStar", and it comes with its own way to correct and/or fix the feature many headphone-wearing fans of Apple struggled to wrap their mind around since this time last year. This Belkin accessory plugs into the iPhone and allows the user to plug in both a charging USB and a standard pair of headphones.

iPhone 8 Review Round-up: No waiting for X

iPhone 8 Review Round-up: No waiting for X

Early iPhone 8 reviews are in, and it would appear that Apple's reveal of the iPhone X has taken a toll on reviewer's expectations. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are indeed slightly-better versions of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, and in years past that'd garner a hearty "the best just got better" from the review circuit. But because Apple's strategy this season was to reveal an even better phone as well in the iPhone X, things are a little bit different.

Huawei promotes Mate 10 “real AI phone” by mocking Face ID

Huawei promotes Mate 10 “real AI phone” by mocking Face ID

Face ID is perhaps the most contentious iPhone X feature next to the notch and amojis. The public demo’s seeming failure, which Apple has tried to explain away, seems to only add to the skepticism of Apple’s Touch ID replacement. Smelling blood, Huawei lost no time in trying to take a swipe at Apple. But it’s only able to do so because it believes it has the “real AI phone”, and it’s inviting the world to see it next month when it unveils the Huawei Mate 10.

KGI: iPhone X, Apple Watch 3 LTE pre-orders are looking good

KGI: iPhone X, Apple Watch 3 LTE pre-orders are looking good

There should really be no surprise here. It is almost always the case that some unpopular change that Apple is rumored to make is expected to negatively affect sales or pre-orders but reality turns out to be different. Such is the case, again, with the super expensive iPhone X and the LTE-model of the Apple Watch 3 which were predicted to only make up a fraction of Apple’s sales. Even KGI, who employs renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, thought so. But, guess what? The Apple Watch 3 LTE might actually make up 90% of pre-orders, while the iPhone X has already affected the iPhone 8’s sales.
