Google Search Rich Cards make results stand out even more

Unlike on desktop, people who do searches on their smartphones or even tablets usually need relevant answers fast. Which means less tapping. Which means seeing the right answers immediately at a glance. Google has been trying to deliver that kind of experience by turning plain search results to search results with snippets. Now it's taking another step forward by introducing Rich Cards, practically search results that visually stand out from the rest with larger preview images and larger cards with more details, to help users see the most interesting and relevant results more easily.

Windows 10 cuts Google Search and Chrome from Cortana

Cortona's web search abilities no longer include Google in a move Microsoft calls its "Personalized Search Experience in Windows 10." According to Ryan Gavin, Microsoft GM of Search and Cortana, "with Windows 10, we have invested in delivering comprehensive, end-to-end search capabilities that make Windows more personal, intuitive and helpful." It's become apparent that users who've put Google's Search into that mix are no longer welcome.

So you like subtleties, yes? Let's have a listen to the ever-so-slight differences in the voice of the newest version of Android's Google Search compared to Lollipop. What we've got here is a set of phones, one a Samsung Galaxy S6 running Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. The other device is a Samsung Galaxy S7 running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. The voice may very well have become just a TINY bit more natural. Certainly slightly different.

Android enabled with app installs inside Google Search

As tipped a few weeks ago, Google is now rolling out the Android ability to install apps from search results. While it's not clear which devices will get this ability, it does seem that it'll be spread to all new smartphones and tablets in releases through the future. If you have Android Marshmallow, you're probably going to be in luck. If you have a Nexus smartphone or tablet or plan on buying one in the near future, you're also probably in luck.

Google mobile search lets you pin (save) images for later

Google may have just started encroaching on Pinterest's turf. Or to be more precise, further encroaching. The search giant has just announced a new feature available to those doing image searches on Android and iOS, whatever the browser in use. Simply search for an image and, if you want to reference it later, "star" it for safe keeping. For all intents and purpose, this is the same basic functionality that Pinterest offers, minus the social aspects of course. Or at least for now.

Try this: Google app now supports offline Voice Commands

Perhaps in preparation for full smart home utilization, Google has begun allowing offline voice commands on Android devices. This feature is only available for Android smartphones and tablets using the official Google (search) app, and commands are relatively limited. This feature will appear when a user has the Google app open without internet connectivity, showing a number of commands available offline. Lucky you, one intrepid Android user happened to be speaking to his device while it wasn't connected to the web.

One part of this equation is Connectionist Temporal Classification (CTC), while the rest consists of sequence discriminative training techniques. Go on a try a Google voice search with "OK Google" now - you'll notice the quickness. And the accuracy. And the ability to be heard in slightly more noisy environments.

Google desktop search now shows Tweets and Twitter accounts

Google desktop search now shows Tweets and Twitter accounts

Earlier today Google Search added Tweets from Twitter to their real-time search results on the desktop. This addition was implemented in the mobile Google Search console earlier this year, and is rolling out to desktop interfaces throughout the day. Google's results will now - or will soon, for you - show Twitter's Tweets along with standard search results on your desktop machine, especially when search terms have to do with keywords that are blowing up on Twitter at the time the search is made.
